VERYL ELAINE VELKER

Veryl Elaine Velker, 82, died in her home Friday after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, James "Gordy" Velker.

Mrs. Velker was born near Bronson, Mich., and grew up on a farm. She graduated from Brighton, Ind., High School in 1942, where she lettered in softball. She returned to Bronson afer high school to work caring for local families. In 1944, she, along with her parents and sisters, moved to Toledo, where she worked at an A&P grocery. A co-worker introduced her to her future husband in 1946, and they married in 1948.

Mrs. Velker worked as a switchboard operator for Ohio Bell Telephone Co. from 1945 until 1949. As her six children grew older, she returned to work and was employed as an operator at First Federal Savings and Loan from 1963 until 1971. She also worked as an operator for Toledo Edison from 1977 until retirement in 1987.

She was a longtime member of Christ the King Parrish. She also was a member of the Jesters Dance Club. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, as well as to Germany, Austria and Ireland.

She is survived by six children, Kathy Taraschke, Christopher and Karen, all of Toledo, Michael of Nashville, Tenn., Steven of Goldsboro, N.C., and William of Rockford, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. Monday at the Ansberg-West Funeral Home, 3000 W. Sylvania Ave., Toledo, Ohio. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Church, 4100 Harvest Lane. There will be no visitation at the funeral home prior to mass. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Any tributes may be made in the form of contributions to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Alzheimer's Association.
