MABEL S. COKER

Mabel Smith Coker, 89, of 1439 Hood Swamp Road went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Coker was born in Wayne County, N.C. on October 31, 1917 to the late John G. Smith and Nora Gurley Smith. She was married to the late Riley B. Coker. With her husband, they established and operated the Coker Feed Mill in the Hood Swamp Community. Mrs. Coker was a charter member and trustee of Coker Memorial Church and was also a former member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church. She served the church in many capacities including choir member, Sunday school teacher and church clerk.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Coker Memorial Church with the Rev. Reynolds Smith and the Rev. Pat Gurley officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.
Mrs. Coker is survived by her daughters, Betty Webber and husband, Bill, Bobbie Sauls, Frances Creech, Rose Sutton and husband, Robert, and Gail Grant and husband, L. H. "Bud"; her son, Brantley Coker and wife, Gaye; her sisters, Ava Faircloth, Esther Casey, Nora Ann Edmundson and Vernell Quinn; her brothers, James E. "Shine" Smith and Joe William Smith; 15 grandchildren, Grant Webber, Lynette Paley, Craig Sauls, Ginger Edmundson, Angie Turnage, Juanita Smith, Hardy Creech, Wanda Deans, Cathy Sutton, Gina Brann, Todd Grant, Jill Grant, Amber Coker, Daniel Coker, and Nathan Coker; 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Laulas Newsome and Sarah Emma Davis; and her brothers, Robert Smith, John G. Smith, Jr. and Rex Smith.
Although flowers are welcome, memorials may be made to Coker Memorial Church, 2643 N. Beston Road, LaGrange, NC 28551.
The family will receive friends Thursday at Coker Memorial Church from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at her home.
