SONNY D. THORNTON

MOUNT OLIVE -- Sonny D. Thornton, 60, 1165 Edwards Store Road, died Saturday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He is the son of Melvin E. "Bill" and Ruth Edwards Thornton. He attended Friendly Holiness Church. He was an electrician, farmer and co-owner of Thornton Auto Sales and an avid golfer.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Friendly Holiness Church with the Revs. Marvin Bryant and Betty Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Wayne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Robert Thornton of Mt. Olive; daughters, Sonya Mendez and husband, Jose Mendez Jr., of Mt. Olive and Tammy Thornton of Mt. Olive; brothers, Curtis Thornton of Raleigh and Doug Thornton of Wilmington; a sister, Avis Edmundson of Wilmington; grandchildren, Christopher and Shaun Kornegay and Taylor Thornton; and special friend, Ruby Smith of Four Oaks.
Mr. Thornton was preceded in death by a daughter, Tiffany Thornton, and granddaughters, Brittany Thornton and Kelly Futrell.

Arrangements are being handled by Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home & Crematory.
