Detention center officer charged in alleged domestic assault

A Wayne County detention officer found himself on the other side of the jail bars Wednesday, when he was arrested following an alleged domestic altercation.
Just after midnight, Wayne County sheriff's deputies responded to 202 Janice Drive in Dudley where they found a 31-year-old female victim suffering from extensive facial injuries.
She was taken to Wayne UNC Health Care by Wayne County EMS where she is still being treated for injuries sustained during the altercation.
According to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report, 32-year-old Jerry Walls was arrested at the scene without incident.
He is charged with felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury. Walls was booked into the Wayne County Detention Center and held on a secured bond of $2,000.
After making his first court appearance Wednesday morning before District Court Judge Joe Setzer, Walls made bond.
As a condition of his being released, court documents show that Walls was ordered not to have any contact with the victim in this case. In domestic cases, the defendant is held for 48 hours or until he or she goes before a judge, whichever comes first. In this case, Walls went before a judge prior to the expiration of the 48 hours.
Walls has been employed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for 11 years and currently serves as a corporal in the detention center transporting inmates. He earns an annual salary of $35,685.
As a result of his arrest, Walls has been suspended without pay pending a complete investigation.
Maj. Richard Lewis confirmed that the victim in this case remains hospitalized.
Walls is scheduled to make his next court appearance on April 25.
