There was a flurry of activity as filing began at noon Monday for most of the offices to be decided in November's midterm elections -- including a member of the Wayne County Board of Education who filed for the state House.
The filing period ends at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Raymond Smith Jr. of Goldsboro filed for the state House District 21 seat now held by Larry Bell of Clinton who is not seeking re-election.
Both are Democrats.
Smith currently is the at-large member of the Wayne County Board of Education.
Republican Robert E. Freeman of Goldsboro also filed for that seat.
Republican Rep. John Bell IV of Goldsboro filed for another term for House District 10.
Wayne County Sheriff Larry Pierce of Goldsboro also filed on Monday. He is a Republican.
Justin Lee Minshew, a Democrat, of Goldsboro filed for Wayne County clerk of court.
His mother, Pam Minshew, currently holds that office, but is not seeking re-election.
Three candidates filed for the Wayne County Board of Education.
Chris West of Pikeville is seeking re-election in District 1, and Jennifer Strickland of Goldsboro in District 4.
Newcomer Joe Democko of LaGrange filed for the District 5 seat now held by Arnold Flowers who is not seeking re-election.
The District 6 seat now held by Rick Pridgen is also up for election this year.
School board races are nonpartisan.
Also up for election this year are:
* N.C. Senate District 5, now held by Democrat Don Davis of Snow Hill.

* N.C. House of Representatives District 4, now held by Republican Jimmy Dixon of Mount Olive.
* U.S. House of Representatives District 7, now held by Republican David Rouzer.
* District attorney, currently held by Matt Delbridge, Republican.
Filing for judicial offices is scheduled for June 18 to 29 in the wake of legislation eliminating judicial primaries.
The primary for offices other than judicial will be held Tuesday, May 8, and the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Filing is June 11 to July 6 for Soil & Water Conservation District supervisor (two members' seats).
