Wayne County could experience its first frost of the fall season early Friday morning.
Patchy frost is possible after 2 a.m. and prior to 8 a.m. before temperatures begin to moderate as the high reaches 71 degrees under clear skies.
A cool air mass had settled over central North Carolina thanks to high pressure located to the southwest. Overnight temperatures are expected to cool into the upper-30s to around 40 across the northern piedmont and the coastal plain with mid-30s probable in the well-sheltered locations.
A clear sky and a near calm wind could contribute to a scattered light frost possibly developing by daybreak.
Because of the light and scattered nature of the frost, little damage is expected to sensitive vegetation.
