Woman found guilty of patient assault

A former Cherry Hospital employee will serve 10 days in jail after being convicted last week in Wayne County Superior Court of assaulting a handicapped patient while she was employed there in February 2016, according to court records.
Edith Teachey, 49, of 401 W. Ash St., was found guilty of misdemeanor assault on a handicapped person.
According to court documents, Teachey choked and scratched a patient at the hospital on the hospital's premises while she was employed there as a health care technician.
James Rogers, a Cherry Hospital police officer, testified in court that officers first learned of the assault when the head nurse over the campus contacted him about an allegation, according to a transcript of testimonies.
According to testimony given by Teachey, the assault happened at about 5 p.m. on Feb. 21, 2016.
At the end of her shift that day around 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., she was asked to turn in her badge and keys, according to the court transcripts.
Teachey had worked at Cherry Hospital since 2001, according to court documents, and is no longer employed.
John Parris, who prosecuted the case, did not return a phone call seeking further comment on the case.
Charles Gurley, Teachey's defense attorney, also did not return a phone call seeking comment.
