A man died in a car crash at 2:27 a.m. Saturday on U.S. 70 Bypass after another driver traveling the same direction rear-ended him, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Thomas Akers, 58, of Goldsboro, died after 24-year-old Jordan Perry of Princeton crashed into the back of Akers' 2015 Ford passenger car near mile marker 362 on the eastbound side of the U.S. 70 Bypass, said First Sgt. Jerry Burton.
The crash sent both vehicles careening off the road. Perry had two passengers inside his 2007 Chevrolet truck at the time of the wreck, Burton said. All three people sustained minor injuries.
According to Burton, Perry's truck collided with Akers' vehicle as they were both driving in the same lane, going in the same direction.
Perry has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, Burton said.
Burton added that Perry was not changing lanes at the time of the crash, and neither speed nor alcohol was thought to be a factor in the collision.
Authorities do not know where Akers was coming from or going to at the time of the wreck that caused his death, Burton said.
