Hospital names chief medical officer

Dr. Anthony Bruno of Chambersburg, Penn., has been named as the new chief medical officer and vice president of medical affairs at Wayne UNC Health Care.

He will assume his duties by mid-March, Wayne UNC Health Care President and CEO Janie Jaberg announced at the hospital board's Wednesday afternoon session.

This is a new vice president position for Wayne UNC Health Care.

Bruno will work with the medical staff and help coordinate the medical staff, clinical staff and non clinical staff in exceeding patients expectations and improving care and quality across the organization, she said.

Bruno will work with medical staff to improve patient care policies ad develop a strong working relationship with providers, clinicians, administration and the community, she said.

"We are very excited about it," Ms. Jaberg said. "Patients first is my mantra, and I am happy to say Dr. Bruno shares my philosophy.

"He has the kind of experience we need at Wayne UNC Health Care to advance our services to another level, I believe our patients will experience firsthand the value of his being on our team."

Bruno is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Summit Orthopedics in Chambersburg, Penn., and medical director of perioperative services for Summit Health.

Bruno has been an orthopedic surgeon in private practice, providing direct patient care for all musculoskeletal complaints and surgeries since 1996.

He has been lead physician with Summit Orthopedic Group since 2009 and medical director of Summit Health since 2011. As medical director, he supervises inpatient and outpatient surgical an procedural care at three locations.

"I look forward with a great enthusiasm to supporting and guiding our medical care providers during a very challenging time in medicine as we work to ensure the highest levels of quality, safety and access for the patients of Wayne County and its surrounding areas."

Bruno is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.

He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts.

Bruno was a Michael and Myrtle Baker Fellow of Orthopedic Research at Penn State, where he also was a general surgery resident and orthopedic surgery resident.

He also holds a MBA from the University of Tennessee. Bruno was the first recipient of Summit Health' patient Quality and Safety Award, and Chambersburg Hospital named him its physician of the year and core values recipient. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Pennsylvania Orthopedic Society and American College of Physician Executives.

Bruno and his wife, Tracy, have a daughter who is currently enrolled at Campbell University.

In other business Wednesday, Ms. Jaberg announced that the hospital has purchased the Cummings Plastic Surgery practice in Kinston. It closed on the practice on Jan. 5, she said.

Located on U.S. 70 just west of Kinston, the practice recently closed following the retirement of Dr. Richard Cummings.

The hospital plans to reopen the practice.

Wayne Memorial Hospital is a 316-bed community not-for-profit hospital that has been serving residents in Wayne County and surroundings areas for more than 120 years. It operates under a management services agreement with UNC Health Care.
