Lawmen secure the scene of a fatal collision between a car and a pedestrian Monday night on South Beston Road.
Sheriff’s deputies speak with bystanders and inspect a vehicle at the scene of a fatal traffic accident at the entrance to the Ellington housing development Monday evening.
Update ---- Officials have released the name of the pedestrian struck and killed while walking in the roadway in LaGrange Monday night. The victim was Dallas Sutton, 26, of LaGrange.
Initial report ---- Poor visibility and a lack of reflective clothing contributed to a man's death Monday night when he was struck by a motorist on Beston Road in La Grange, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m., as Seven Springs resident Brittany Leigh McDonough, 25, traveled north on Beston Road. Trooper J.S. Smith said that the man was walking in the middle of the road, also headed northbound, and that Mrs. McDonough did not have enough time after seeing him to avoid a collision.
Smith said that speed was not a factor in the incident, and characterized it as a freak accident.
"This could've happened to me or you, she was just driving along to go get her kids and then suddenly he's right in the middle of the road," he said. "She's not injured, just very shaken."
The man ---- whose identity has not yet been released ---- was pronounced dead on arrival.
Poor street lighting combined with the heavy fog which blanketed areas of the county Monday to severely limit visibility on the road. Smith said that the victim had not taken safety precautions while walking down the road.
"He was walking down the middle of the road, no reflective clothing, and facing away from traffic." he said.
First responders blocked off Beston Road while they cleared the scene. By around 7:30 p.m., the road was clear again.
