Two men are being held in the Wayne County Detention Center today on charges of trafficking heroin after they were pulled over in the Elmwood Housing Community Wednesday for reckless driving, a Goldsboro Police Department press release said.
Tracy Michael Burris, 35, 450 U.S. Highway 13 S., and Shontionne Damian Darden, 30, 306 Wilmington Ave., are charged with one count each of trafficking opium or heroin, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, maintaining a vehicle for the sale or use of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Burris faces an additional charge of reckless driving. His bond has been set at $415,000 secured.
Darden, who faces additional charges for littering and for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, has a bond set at $495,000 secured. Darden was in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle at the time of his arrest.
According to police reports, Burris and Darden were arrested in a 2015 Chrysler 200 in the 400 block of Charles Street at 2:55 p.m. The release said officers from the Housing Division and from the Patrol Division's D-shift conducted a traffic stop after officers "observed Burris drive careless and reckless."
Police found the men in possession of six and a half grams of heroin, five grams of cocaine, an unknown amount of hydrocodone and the assault rifle, the release said. Investigators said a large sum of money was also recovered, but declined to say how much.
"(We are) not releasing the amount at this time," Capt. Dwayne Dean said via email.
Both Burris and Darden were taken into custody without incident.
The two men are scheduled for a first appearance in Wayne County District Court today.
