Judge Arnold Jones throws a pitch for the attorney's team in the doctors vs. attorneys Fowl Play softball game. After leading 19-6 at the bottom of the third inning, the attorneys were edged out by one run, giving the doctors a 26-25 victory in the bottom of the sixth.

An Air Force turkey, one of 16 hand-painted birds, is perched in the window of The Flying Shamrock on John Street. The birds are part of a Beak Week scavenger hunt promoting downtown businesses. A sheet with clues for the hunt can be found at the Wayne County Arts Council.

Beak Week will culminate Saturday with a festival downtown featuring music, food and games.

Two separate stages will be placed downtown tonight for concerts being held, with music provided by the Daily Blues Band, the Carolina Treat Band, the 40 East Band and Trial by Fire: Tribute to Journey.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a cold beer on a warm day, as there will be a beer garden downtown as well as food trucks. There will be 30 various types of vendors providing different services and products to the public, as well as nine food vendors.

Saturday events will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include activities for children, including inflatables and games.

As part of the finale, the winners of a scavenger hunt for 16 wooden chicken cutouts, which has been going on all week, will be announced.

"We enjoy events like this because it encourages people to walk around and see what great shops we have," said Elizabeth Rutland of the Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp.

Designs for the birds were created by children at the Arts Council summer camps. Local artists and groups painted the designs onto the cutouts.

"Kids come up with the coolest things," event coordinator Sarah Merritt said. "It's a really cool project, I'm glad I did it."

Mrs. Merritt is already planning next year's poultry scavenger hunt, with the goal of 30 hidden birds.

In another Beak Week event Thursday, the Fowl Play softball game between doctors and lawyers was held. The event is held to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County, and it raised more than $2,200 this year.

This is the event's third year, but it was moved from October to be a part of the Beak Week festivities.

While the rivalry is fierce, it's all for the cause, said Mary Ann Dudley, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club.

The money raised this year goes toward general operating costs for the club, Ms. Dudley said.

At the bottom of the third inning, it looked as though the attorneys would bar the doctors from a win, but in a show of surgical precision, the physicians rallied to win 26-25 at the bottom of the sixth.

Beak Week is sponsored by Bud Light, Mt. Olive Pickle Co., Case Farms, First Financial Bank, Southern Produce, Cottle Farms and 107.9 WNCT.
