2014's first arrival

Lyric Lee Bridges, the first baby born in Wayne County in 2014, sleeps contentedly in the arms of his mother, Domonique Holmes, on Thursday. He was born at 6:46 p.m. Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital and is the third child for Ms. Holmes and Darren Bridges of Dudley.
Full SizeThe first baby of 2014 waited until late in the day Wednesday to make his appearance.
Domonique Holmes and Darren Bridges of Dudley welcomed their third son into the world at 6:46 p.m. New Year's Day at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Lyric Lee Bridges weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces and was 21 inches long.
Ms. Holmes' due date was actually Dec. 29, which made for a lot of anticipation over the holidays.
"We were sitting on go, ready to go," she said.
"Everybody said it was going to happen on New Year's or the day before," Bridges said.
The maternity ward at the hospital was relatively calm that day, hospital staff said.
"I got here about 12-something," Ms. Holmes said. "We got here and there wasn't anybody here. We were the only ones on the floor."
Soon after she delivered her child, though, she said she heard about another baby being born at the hospital after 7 p.m.
Despite all the excitement of the holiday and the newborn's birth, he made a quiet entrance into the world.
"He didn't cry. He came out sucking his thumb," Bridges said.
"He barely cries," Ms. Holmes said. "We have been waiting for him to cry."
Holding Lyric cradled in her arms as he slept contentedly, she expressed her gratitude for his arrival.
"I'm happy it's a boy," she said. "I'm used to boys."
His siblings -- Jaidyn Watts, 8, and Jordyn Watts, 6 -- are also looking forward to being big brothers, their parents said.
"They have been ecstatic the whole nine months," Bridges said. "We called them, they were (in the background) screaming. They said they have got a card. They've been talking non-stop. They're ready to see him."
The proud dad, who is self-employed so his schedule allows him to spend more time with his family, was also looking forward to reuniting with the rest of the family.
"I love kids. I'm always around for the kids. I haven't left (the hospital) since he was born," he said. "He's a blessing. He came when he wanted to come. It's a great way to bring it (2014) in."
