Wayne County sheriff's deputies arrested John Collins Chase II this morning in connection to the shooting of Anthony Scott Carter on Tuesday.
According to deputies, the early reports on the incident indicated that Carter was the victim of a drug deal that went wrong, and that as a result of the drug transaction had been shot in the chest.
However, according to a press release today, deputies later found that the original story had been fabricated by Chase and his fiancee in order to mislead law enforcement officials, and that Carter had been shot following an argument at Chase's residence. Chase and his fiancee, who has not been identified, were the ones who took Carter to Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Chase, of 1097 Genoa Road, Dudley, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He is being held in the Wayne County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
Carter, 19, of 122 Erik Drive is listed as in serious but stable condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to law enforcement officials.
Other charges are pending by the Sheriff's Office, and the investigation is ongoing.
