Eastern Wayne student earns NCSU scholarship

An Eastern Wayne High School senior has been named recipient of the prestigious Park Scholarship to attend N.C. State University.
Khari Cyrus plans to major in human biology on the pre-med track and hopes to one day become an orthopedic surgeon.
Approximately 45 undergraduate merit scholarships are given out nationwide each year.
The Park Scholarship pays expenses for four years of study at N.C. State and is valued at $86,000 for in-state residents and $141,000 for those out-of-state.
The award covers tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, travel and personal expenses. It also provides recipients with a $2,200 computer stipend and grants to fund professional and personal enrichment experiences, including travel abroad opportunities, research projects, service activities and conferences.
While academics play a role in the process, the decision is based upon more than just good grades, officials said.
"The selection committee looks at the depth of a candidate's character, their integrity, and their commitment to better the community in which they live," said Rick Pridgen, member of the Wayne County Board of Education, which recognized Cyrus at its meeting this week.
"Mr. Cyrus has proven himself to be worthy of this scholarship, both inside and outside the classroom. In recent years he has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Wayne Memorial Hospital. He has also served as the lead student ambassador for Eastern Wayne High, giving tours to students and assisting with the school's freshman orientation."
