A sign and locked front door tells the story at the Ash Street Pizza Inn. After 27 years the doors are locked.

Pizza Inn on East Ash Street closed its doors earlier this week after doing business for 27 years.

A phone call to the Ash Street restaurant resulted in a recorded message thanking customers for their years of patronage and directing them to the U.S. 70 location, which remains open.

There, management and employees would not comment on the reason behind the Ash Street location closing.

They directed questions to Jill Nielson, the marketing director for Diversified Foods, which is the Pizza Inns' parent company.

Repeated calls to Mrs. Nielson about why the Ash Street location closed were not returned.

Mrs. Nielson's father, the late H.M. Poythress, first brought Pizza Inn to Goldsboro in 1969. Poythress later became a founding partner of Division One Foods, an area franchisor for Pizza Inn covering a three-state area.

Poythress died in February 2010 at age 73.
