Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair officials said this morning that the fair midway will not open today as scheduled because of rain.
A steady downpour has inundated the county and much of the state, with as much as 5-6 inches or more falling Tuesday and another 4-5 inches Wednesday. Gov. Beverly Perdue has declared coastal counties to be in a state of emergency because of the heavy rains.
Fair Manager Milton Ingram said that after discussing the situation with officials with Powers American Midway, it was determined that the grounds were simply too wet to start today.
Ingram said the meat goat show scheduled for this evening will take place as scheduled. The rain is expected to move out by Friday and Ingram said he hopes the midway will be able to open at 4 p.m. that day.
The fair is scheduled to run through Oct. 9.
