Larson lifts Trojans in OT

MOUNT OLIVE -- Kaylee Larson collected the golden goal in the 98th minute as University of Mount Olive turned back Conference Carolinas women's soccer rival Converse (SC) 2-1 in overtime at Amon Field.

Larson took the ball away well into the Valkyries' side of the field and drove it all way into the Trojans' attacking third. She chipped the ball as the Converse keeper and the ball trickled into the corner 7 ½ minutes into the first OT.

Converse took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.

UMO answered 13 minutes into the second half. Jaelyn Brown won the ball outside the right side of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot past the Valkyries' keeper.

The Trojans continued to press forward, but couldn't convert until the first OT session.

Goalie Marlayna Frutiger notched five saves between the pipes for UMO.

Mount Olive (2-1-0 overall, 1-0-0 CC) visits Lincoln (TN) Memorial on Wednesday, and plays host to conference rival Erskine next Saturday.

UMO men fall to Mars Hill

GREENSBORO -- MacLayne Gairrett provided the University of Mount Olive's lone goal in a 2-1, double-overtime loss to in-state men's soccer rival Mars Hill at Bryan Park on Saturday evening.

Gairrett converted a header off of Baptiste Tajan's corner kick in the 3rd minute.

Mars Hill leveled the match in the 18th minute and recorded the game winner in the 103rd minute.

Freshman keeper Austin Porter registered three saves for UMO.

The Trojans (2-1-1 overall) return home Saturday for their Conference Carolinas opener against Erskine (SC) College. Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Amon Field.
