DUDLEY -- A post-game huddle isn't measured by wins or losses.
The time calculated is based on improvements needed.
Charles B. Aycock head baseball coach Charles Davis gathered his team together after an 11-6 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A rival Southern Wayne on Friday evening.
A conference win made Davis proud, but he believes his team can avoid simple mistakes in the future.
"It was a good win especially for a conference game, but I was not very pleased with how we played all phases of the game," Davis said, who claimed his 480th win of his 25-year career at CBA. "We didn't pitch well, we didn't play defense well. We ran the bases pretty good, but we were missing something today. A little bit of a lackadaisical attitude, I think, and that's what I was getting on them right there about."
The second inning gave the assumption of a shorter post-game huddle for the Golden Falcons.
After leading the Saints, 1-0, in the first inning, CBA collected six runs in the second with a RBI from senior Chandler Gentry and two RBI from junior Bradley Pate. Junior Chandler Matthews slammed the ball over the Saints' fence for the lone home run of the game, which brought in Pate. Junior Ashton McGee stole home to lead SW, 7-1, going into the bottom of the second inning.
The Saints weren't happy.
Sophomore Jack Casbarro hit the ball in the infield, but the SW pitcher landed on first base and sent home junior Derek Holsinger. Seniors Cole Barwick and Hunter Barwick both scored for the Saints.
SW trailed CBA, 7-4, but the fourth inning added to the assumption.
Pate, McGee and senior Jacob Sanford touched home plate to lead the Saints by six runs. McGee scored again in the sixth inning.
Casbarro entered the second half of the inning and hit a line drive to second base. He ran to first and brought in Cole Barwick. The Saints added another run in the seventh inning, but CBA's defense caused three straight outs for the Saints.
Casbarro threw for four innings and had two strikeouts.
The Golden Falcons' Kyle Davis, who ended up as the winning pitcher, threw for five innings and had five strikeouts.
"Offensively, I was really pleased with our guys," SW head coach Jackson Massey said. "Past couple of games, we've kind of turned it around with our offense. Our defense has been great for us the whole year, but we didn't make some plays tonight. It's really the first game we've had like that. It seems like every time we would make a mistake, they (Golden Falcons) tack on two or three runs after it.
"We're going to make errors. We just got to try to limit the damage whenever we do make them. Jack battled on the mound, he didn't have his best stuff, but he did a good enough job, I think, to keep us in the game -- if we could have eliminated some of those mistakes."
The Saints (3-5 overall, 0-2 ECC) play host to J.H. Rose on Tuesday. The Golden Falcons (8-0, 1-0) defeated SouthWest Edgecombe, 10-0, at the Tobs Classic in Wilson on Saturday -- giving Davis No. 481. CBA plays host to D.H. Conley on Tuesday.
