Hannah Staubs' offensive putback off of a missed free throw helped Hilltop Christian escape Faith Christian, 37-33, in a N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A non-region affair Thursday evening.
Staubs supplied a double-double -- 10 points, team-high 12 rebounds -- as the Chargers climbed to 11-3 overall this season.
Jordan Lawhan poured in a game- and season-high 19 points for Faith Christian.
"(Jordan) is the only aggressive offensive player I have because she's the only one who feels confident with the basketball," first-year FCA head coach Jeff Stocks said. "She's not afraid of going to the hole. I need to do a better job as a coach getting her the ball more. We don't move well to get it to her."
Lawhan's layup off Meredith Skinner's assist pushed the Conquerors (2-7 overall) ahead 32-31 with 2:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. The basket erased a five-point deficit after Hilltop had put together an 8-0 run.
The Chargers regained the lead on consecutive offensive putbacks by Staubs, including the second which occurred in the final half minute. Madison Manriquez sealed the outcome with a single free with 11.1 seconds remaining in regulation.
"(It was) a great effort for us because that team had been beating everyone who had played us. I thought our girls played very hard," Stocks said.
