DUDLEY -- Myleah Jones and Ashely Darden scored 16 points apiece and Charles B. Aycock fended off county and Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A foe Southern Wayne, 50-35, on Thursday evening.
After seeing their 11-point halftime lead shrink to single digits late in the third period, the Golden Falcons (11-2 overall, 2-0 ECC) switched back to their zone defense. They hit 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
"We tried going into a different defense at halftime," Coach Roy Harrell said. "It kind of backfired on us there, so we went back to what we knew. I think that was the key. When we switched from our zone to man coverage, they got a few easy baskets.
"We didn't cut off the dominant hand."
Despite scoring five first-half points and dealing with foul trouble, Zaria Atkins led Southern Wayne with 16 points.
"Our post players need to step up," SW head coach Ricky Lofton said of his team's frontcourt play. "We put a lot of pressure on them, and they need to bring it and show up. That's what we were missing tonight."
Southern Wayne travels to Goldsboro on Saturday.
