Second-year Eastern Wayne head coach Philemon Gray threw multiple defensive looks at North Lenoir on Monday night and wanted to see how many his girls could execute come conference time.
The answer? All of them.
Whether it was a 1-3-1 half-court zone or straight full-court man-to-man press, the Warriors shut down the Hawks, 58-36, on Monday evening.
"I think the girls responded well to every defense we played in, there wasn't any one that really stuck out," Gray said.
A game after forcing 28 turnovers against West Craven, the Warriors had 17 steals against the Hawks.
"We do a really good job getting steals and getting in transition, pushing it up," guard Tianna Christopher said. "That's just what we do."
Christopher finished with 15 points and six steals.
Jasmine Covington came off the bench to score 10 points and grab four steals. Gray, along with testing defenses, is experimenting with different lineups because of the depth he has this season.
"It's really important for us, because it's good to know that if one of our starters come off the court there's not going to be a drop off," Covington said. "The players coming off the bench are going to do just as well for us, so it's huge to have that depth.
Treycie Ford finished with 10 points for the Warriors, and Naheria Hamilton just missed a double-double with nine points 11 rebounds.
Chelsea Wynn grabbed 10 boards.
Mikayla Kremer led the Hawks with 14 points, including four threes.
