Epiphany got the one break it needed.

Wayne Country Day wondered if and when good fortune would glance in its direction.

Florian Vorleiter scored the game's only goal in the 63rd minute of the Falcons' 1-0 victory in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers missed an opportunity to take an early lead when Miller Gerrard's penalty kick was stopped by Epiphany keeper Jackson Seymore in the 13th minute.

The Falcons had a goal waived off on an offside call in the 16th minute.

Wayne Country Day (3-6-1 overall, 2-2-0 CPIC) tallied three more shots on goal in the first half, but neither team generated a quality scoring chance.

Epiphany controlled the possession early in the second half and David Romero's shot from inside the 18-yard box was saved by Chargers' keeper Patrick Hall.

Vorleiter won a loose ball and dribbled through the Wayne Country Day defense before firing a shot past Hall in the 63rd minute. The Falcons won despite being held to three shots on goal.

"I think they had three shots the whole game," Ellis said. "That's soccer. I think in the second half we got a little bit excited, and a little bit jumpy with possession here and there."

The Chargers appeared to be tackled inside the 18-yard box twice in the second half, but neither instance resulted in a penalty kick. The Falcons' also seemed to commit a hand-ball penalty inside the 18-yard box in the final 10 minutes of the game.

"I think not just at the high school level, there's a thing with the referees that they're scared to give more than one penalty (kick) for a team in a game," Ellis said. "There was a definite hand ball and there was a definite foul in the box in the second half. It just wasn't our day."
