Best leads Warriors past Rams, 50-20

SNOW HILL -- Kamone Best watches highlight film of his older brother Lamar's playing days at Eastern Wayne every chance he gets.

With a few more performances like the one he turned in Friday night, Kamone might just end up having the type of career Lamar did.

Best rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries in the Warriors' 50-20 win at Greene Central. The sophomore had rushing touchdowns of 26, 69 and 83 yards.

"Lamar is still going to tell me I stink," Best joked. "I've got his highlight tape and I watch it every day, and I learn from it and I look up to him. Our offense has improved a lot, especially momentum wise. We used to always come out flat, but we're getting it now.

'We're moving."

Eastern Wayne racked up 460 yards of offense and forced three Greene Central turnovers. The Warriors led 14-0 after the opening quarter on Best's 83-yard score and Ricky Steiner's 11-yard touchdown pass to Deshawn Boudy.

Eastern Wayne's offensive line, a unit that was surrounded by question marks at the start of the season, continued to create running lanes for its backs. Best raced 26 yards to the end zone late in the second quarter as the lead grew to 22-0.

"Our backs hit the hole pretty hard," Warriors' head coach Bubba Williams said. "I've been saying all along we've got skill guys. Kamone didn't finish last year, but he's come back pretty determined so I hope he continues with that. He did a good job tonight."

Greene Central (0-4) moved the ball at times throughout the first half, but failed to finish drives. The Rams didn't convert a third down in the opening two quarters. Austin Batchelor's 6-yard touchdown pass to Curtez Braswell late in the second quarter finally got Greene Central on the scoreboard.

The Rams lost a pair of fumbles, Batchelor threw an interception and Greene Central was flagged for 11 penalties for 105 yards.

Lavoris Vick tacked on two third-quarter touchdown runs for Eastern Wayne. Boudy took a screen pass from Mitch Pike 44 yards for a touchdown. Best's final score of the night came from 69 yards out early in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors have a bye week to enjoy their 4-0 start before beginning Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference play at South Central on Sept. 27.

"4-0 is where you want to be," Williams said. "We'll go play South Central next and we'll see what happens there. We've put ourselves in position."
