Eastern Wayne beats archrival Goldsboro

Eastern Wayne's defense shined for the second consecutive week.

The Warriors held Goldsboro to 100 yards of total offense, forced four turnovers and rolled to a 35-14 win at Little Big Horn on Friday evening.

"Those guys on the defensive line played hard and gave us a really good effort," Eastern Wayne head coach Guy "Bubba" Williams said. "We made enough plays to win on the offensive side and we got out of here with a 'W' over a good Goldsboro team."

Eastern Wayne (2-0 overall) got on the scoreboard first at the end of the second quarter when Chris Allen plunged into the end zone from five yards out. Allen tossed a two-point conversion to Deshawn Boudy and gave the Warriors an 8-0 lead at the intermission.

Quarterback Mitch Pike capped Eastern Wayne's second possession of the second half with a 23-yard scoring strike to Alex Davila. Lavoris Vick broke free from 57 yards out on the Warriors' next possession and pushed the score to 22-0.

Goldsboro (0-2 overall) broke the scoreless drought when Clyde James hauled in a 60-yard pass from Nashir Bowden that cut the deficit to 22-6. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Eastern Wayne's Zongio Troy returned the ensuing kick 70 yards for a touchdown.

Pike capped the Warriors' tally with a one-yard run with less than three minutes to play. The score gave the Warriors a 35-6 advantage.

Goldsboro running back Rashied Malette answered with a 56-yard scamper for the final Cougar touchdown with one minute to play.

"We have to come out on Monday and address some things," Goldsboro head coach Eric Reid said. "We put our defense in bad spots where they were up against the wall. They did a great job in the first half, but eventually (Eastern Wayne) started capitalizing on those opportunities."

Pike completed 11 passes for 135 yards and a TD, and rushed for 20 yards and another TD. Malik Richard hauled in six catches for 79 yards.

"We didn't have a very good week of practice this week and it showed on offense," Williams said. "We had a few big plays that led to scores, but overall I didn't think we executed very well."

Malette led Goldsboro with 111 yards on 17 carries and scored one touchdown. Bowden finished with 13 completions on 26 attempts for 150 yards and one touchdown.

Goldsboro entertains county rival Southern Wayne next Friday, while Eastern Wayne plays host to Red Springs.
