DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne routinely executed with runners in scoring position, while Eastern Wayne struggled to cash in Monday evening.
Southern Wayne had nine different players tally an RBI in an 11-1 mercy-rule shortened win over Eastern Wayne in an Eastern Carolina Baseball League game at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.
Southern Wayne pounded out 10 hits and scored two or more runs in three of the five innings played. Chase Horton (two RBI), Nathan Barwick (RBI) and Cole Barwick (RBI) each finished with two hits.
"We have a round in batting practice where we hit with runners in scoring position," Southern Wayne head coach Jackson Massey said. "I thought Chase and a couple of other guys did a great job of that today. The last thing you want to do in those situations is have punchouts."
Southern Wayne took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an Eastern Wayne error and Cody Davis' sacrifice fly.
Eastern Wayne got a run back on Ryan Kelly's bases-loaded walk in the top of the second inning. Eastern Wayne left the bases loaded and squandered an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead after it stranded runners on second and third base in the top of the third inning.
Josh Jernigan's RBI double in the home half of the third inning increased Southern Wayne's lead to 3-1. Cole Barwick and Horton delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nathan Barwick added an RBI double as the margin grew to 6-1.
Jacob Hollingsworth supplied an RBI groundout.
Horton and Jake Ferrell each provided RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth inning. Alex Bradley drew a bases-loaded walk and Chris Reedy ended the game with a sacrifice fly.
Jernigan surrendered one unearned run on two hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in four innings of work to earn the win on the mound. Bradley tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
"I think Josh got a little tired at the end and that is going to happen in this weather," Massey said. "When runners got on he didn't let that dictate the rest of the inning and he located the strike zone. His curveball was working real well and he pitched a heck of a ballgame."
Southern Wayne entertains Rosewood today, while Eastern Wayne plays host to Greene Central.
