Southern Wayne softball tops Eastern Wayne

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne got key hits with runners in scoring position and scored in every inning of a 12-2 victory over Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Eastern Wayne on Friday night.
The Saints collected 12 hits in the five-inning affair.
"That is one thing I can say so far this season," Southern Wayne head coach Michael Wiggs said. "Our girls have been really swinging the bats. Tonight our pitching and defense were solid and the hot hitting continued."
Southern Wayne (5-3 overall, 1-2 ECC) plated two runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of Eastern Wayne errors. The Saints added an insurance run in the second inning and broke the game open in the third.
Hope Rose led off with a single and moved into scoring position on Hailey Warren's base hit. Savannah Wiggins delivered an RBI single and Aubrey Sasser capped the outburst with a two-run single that made the score 6-0.
"We haven't been able to avoid that one bad inning," Eastern Wayne head coach Jackie Lewis said. "So far this season, that one big inning has been a part of every game."
Eastern Wayne (0-5, 0-3) battled back with two runs in the fourth inning.
Starla Strickland was hit by a pitch and advanced on a Southern Wayne error. Amanda Hall delivered a single and Brooke Morawski hit a sacrifice fly that made the score 6-2.
Southern Wayne answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Wiggins belted an RBI single, Sasser followed with a two-run double and Claire Kennedy belted an RBI base hit that put the Saints ahead 11-2. The Saints ended the game with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Morgan Best earned the win in the pitcher's circle for Southern Wayne. Best allowed just three hits over five innings.
Southern Wayne travels to South Johnston on Tuesday, while Eastern Wayne plays host to Charles B. Aycock.
