Miller brothers shut down Wallace-Rose Hill

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Coming off of a pair of losses during the opening week of the baseball season, Spring Creek was a team in search of a calming presence on the pitcher's mound.

The Miller brothers delivered.

Luke Miller tossed four innings and earned the win, and Logan Miller closed the game out as Spring Creek defeated Wallace-Rose Hill 8-4 on Tuesday night.

"It's good to get that first win and to get it at home," Spring Creek head coach Heath Whitfield said. "I thought we played a pretty good game, early in the season, in less than ideal conditions."

A cold rain blanketed the field during pre-game drills and temperatures dipped into the 40's as play began. The cool weather did not seem to hurt the Bulldogs, who plated two first-inning runs.

Spring Creek answered with one run in the bottom of the first when a Wallace-Rose Hill error allowed Logan Miller to score from second base. The Gators added one run in the third inning and took the lead in the fourth.

Tre Hammonds reached on a fielder's choice and Will Rouse made it to first base on an error. Hunter Walker delivered a sacrifice and Luke Miller plated both runners with a double that put the home team ahead 4-3.

"We did a good job hitting in specific situations," Whitfield said. "We stole a few bases, bunted guys over and manufactured some runs."

Spring Creek (1-2 overall) added one run in the fifth and broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Luke Miller walked, Logan Miller singled and Allen Coor followed with a two-run single. Coor later scored when Ian Ladd drew a bases-loaded walk and made the game 8-3.

Luke Miller finished the game 2 for 2 with two runs batted in. Logan Miller, Matt Rogers, Coor, and Ladd each added one hit in the win.

Gavin Herring suffered the loss for Wallace-Rose Hill despite not allowing an earned run. The Bulldogs made six errors, which led to five unearned runs.

Spring Creek plays host to Dixon on Friday.
