Goldsboro girls stay perfect in conference play

Goldsboro withstood a furious rally from Rosewood in the final 21/2 minutes and hung on for a 46-40, Carolina 1-A Conference road win Tuesday evening.

The Cougars led 42-31 with 2:39 left before the Eagles began using their press to force turnovers and scored seven straight points to pulled with 42-38.

"It's different," Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells said. "Over the last three years when Goldsboro goes on a run and goes up 12, Rosewood teams of the past have folded and our girls have been on those teams. Tonight we didn't.

"I thought our girls executed our game plan to perfection. We executed our offense and slowly chipped away at it and I'm proud of them."

Goldsboro (12-5 overall, 7-0 CC) went just 2 for 5 from the free throw line in the final 15 seconds, but Tyona Moses added a pivotal layup off an Eagles' turnover in the closing seconds.

Rosewood was haunted by 18 turnovers.

Moses and Talaya Lassiter both finished with 12 points for the Cougars. Destini Covington added 11 points.

"We have a hard time realizing sometimes that when a team presses us we have to step our game up and take care of the basketball," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock said. "We get lead in our shoes and we stand around and look. They handed it well after we made two or three unnecessary turnovers."

Eagles' freshman Lexi Mercer led all scorers with 21 points.

The Cougars entertain Princeton on Friday night while Rosewood (12-6, 5-2) plays host to Spring Creek.
