Girls' basketball

Rosewood 58, Ayden-Grifton 34

* After a trip to the Carolina 1-A Conference tournament finals a year ago, Rosewood is hungry to take the next step as a program.

The Eagles made a move in the right direction with a 58-34 victory over conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Friday night. It was the Eagles' conference opener.

Rosewood (8-4 overall, 1-0) executed effectively in its half-court offense and outscored the Chargers 36-17 in the second half. The Eagles also defended well against Ayden-Grifton's methodical, patient offense.

"We want to be in the top three in the conference and we feel like we have a good chance to do that if we keep playing the way we're playing," Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells said. "We threw our playbook away early in the year because I was trying to make things too complicated. Now that the girls have gotten it, our execution has gotten a lot better in the half-court set.

"The girls have done a great job of accepting their role in this new offense we're running."

The Eagles' Lexi Mercer led all scorers with 18 points and Krystal Yelverton added 13 points. Alicia Burns finished with 11 points.

Alexius Dixon had 14 for the Chargers.

Rosewood travels to Spring Creek on Jan. 18.

Wayne Country Day 40,

Freedom Christian 36

* Wayne Country Day held off a furious second half rally to defeat Freedom Christian 40-36 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference game Friday night.

Sarah Best kept the Chargers afloat with several key baskets down the stretch including the 3-point shot that put the Chargers ahead for good in the fourth quarter. Best finished the game with 24 points.

Bailee Creger added eight points for the Chargers.

Diamond Whitted led the way for Freedom Christian with 20 points.

Wayne Country Day (4-6 overall, 2-0 CPIC) plays host to Oakwood on Tuesday.

Princeton 53, Spring Creek 31

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Princeton opened the Carolina 1-A Conference portion of its schedule with a 53-31 victory at Spring Creek on Friday evening.

The Bulldogs' Charley Cox led all scorers with 19 points. Savanna Massengill finished with 12 points and Hailey Wood had 10 points.

Alyssa Borja scored 18 points and Amber Bucham added 11 points for the Gators.

Princeton (7-5 overall, 1-0 CC) plays host to Goldsboro on Jan. 18 while Spring Creek (0-12, 0-2 CC) entertains Rosewood the same night.

Goldsboro 71, North Duplin 11

* Goldsboro opened defense of its Carolina 1-A Conference championship with a 71-11 victory over visiting North Duplin on Friday evening.

The Cougars built a 26-7 lead by halftime and never looked back. Brandy Johnson led the Cougars with 10 points. Jordan Jones and Deja Aycock each scored three points for the Rebels.

Goldsboro (6-5 overall, 1-0) continues conference play Jan. 18 at Princeton. North Duplin (1-12, 0-1) plays host to Ayden-Grifton the same night.

Southern Wayne 57,

North Lenoir 54

* LaGRANGE -- Southern Wayne improved to 2-2 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with a 5 7-54 victory on Friday evening at North Lenoir.

Zaria Atkins led the Saints with 25 points. Erica Lee and Amanda Bizzell each scored 14 points for the Hawks.

Southern Wayne (8-6 overall, 2-2 ECC) plays host to Charles B. Aycock on Jan. 16. North Lenoir (2-13, 0-3) visits Eastern Wayne the same night.

Trinity Christian 52,

Wayne Christian 29

* RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian endured a 52-29 loss to Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Trinity Christian on Friday evening.

Brooke Barfield paced the Eagles with 13 points to go with four rebounds and three steals. Victoria Combs added eight points and Kelsey Kornegay had six points.

Trinity Christian-Greenville 41, Faith Christian 21

* GREENVILLE -- Faith Christian suffered a 41-21 loss on Friday evening at Trinity Christian of Greenville.

Andie Strickland led the Conquerors with five points. Molly Roebuck added four points.

Boys' basketball

Spring Creek 59,

Princeton 55

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Spring Creek knocked down open shots in the second half and hung on for a 59-55 win over Carolina 1-A Conference opponent Princeton on Friday night.

Logan Scott paced the Gators with 14 points. Trey Hammonds supplied 11 points, five rebounds and five assists. Chad Spurgeon provided 10 points and eight rebounds.

Daniel Krentz had nine points and Jordan Hicks added eight points and eight rebounds.

Goldsboro 79,

North Duplin 28

* Goldsboro picked up its first Carolina 1-A Conference win under new head coach Russell Stephens with a 79-28 victory over North Duplin on Friday night inside Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium.

Lonzia Tyson paced the Cougars with 17 points. Myron Carmon supplied 15 points and Julius Murphy had 12.

Tyler Royal scored seven points for the Rebels and Cedrick Kornegay had five.

Goldsboro (7-6 overall, 1-0) visits Union on Monday. North Duplin (1-12, 0-1) entertains Ayden-Grifton on Jan. 18.

North Lenoir 61,

Southern Wayne 54

* LaGRANGE -- Southern Wayne improved to 3-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play with a 61-54 win over North Lenoir on Friday night inside Wooten Gymnasium.

The win kept the Hawks tied with Triton for first place in the ECC. Triton did not play.

North Lenoir's Jauquaz Jones led all scorers with 15 point. Reggie Rouse provided 11 points and Braxton Davis had 10.

Tarvis Bradshaw paced the Saints with 12 points and Jaylen Roberts had 10.

North Lenoir (8-7 overall) travels to Eastern Wayne on Jan. 16. Southern Wayne (8-5, 2-2 ECC) entertains C.B. Aycock the same night.

Trinity Christian 70,

Wayne Christian 42

* RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian remained winless in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play with a 70-42 loss on Friday night at Trinity Christian.

Chris Easom led the Eagles with 16 points and Tyler Lacerda had 10 points. Trinity's Josef Simme led all scorers with 21 points.

Wayne Christian (1-14 overall, 0-7 CCC) visits Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

Farmville Central 51,

Greene Central 49

* SNOW HILL -- Jalyn Harper scored 19 points but it wasn't enough as Greene Central came up short in a 51-49 loss to Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Farmville Central on Friday night.

Joseph Biggs added 12 points for the Rams.

Greene Central (3-12 overall, 0-4 EPC) travels to Kinston on Jan. 18.

Faith Christian 76,

Trinity Christian Greenville 65

* GREENVILLE -- Aaron Hill poured in 39 points and 10 assists to lead Faith Christian to a 76-65 win on Friday night at N.C. Christian Schools Association foe Trinity Christian of Greenville.

Blake Floars supplied 15 points and Andrew Parrish and Jared Jones each had 10 points.

Faith (8-7 overall) entertains Bethel Christian on Tuesday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 72, North Duplin 33 -- Eric Bufkin scored a game-high 17 points for the Cougars. Kisheem Faison contributed 16 points and Daktavius Wheeler had 10. Boone McNeil led the Rebels with 12 points and Brandon Patterson added eight.
