Southern Wayne 53, Goldsboro 46
DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne avenged an earlier loss to Goldsboro, 53-46, on Friday evening.
The Saints pulled ahead 8-6 late in the first quarter and never trailed again.
"This was a big win for us because it shows how far we have come as a team," Southern Wayne head coach Ricky Lofton said. "The last couple of seasons we have really been searching for some guards that can handle pressure and create their own shot. We have that this year."
Zaria Atkins paced Southern Wayne with 19 points. Keejah Wilson and Latrecia Johnson each finished with 10 points in the win.
Tyona Moses scored 14 points for the Cougars.
Goldsboro (4-5 overall) plays host to Charles B. Aycock on Jan. 3. Southern Wayne (5-4) will participate in the West Craven Holiday Tournament.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 56, Southern Wayne 45 -- Eric Bufkin led the Goldsboro offense with 24 points. Nashir Bowden added 16 points in the win.
