Golden Falcons ground Eagles' attack

PIKEVILLE -- It was never pretty, but Charles B. Aycock will take it.

The Golden Falcons used excellent team defense to hold back county rival Rosewood 48-32 on Wednesday night. C.B. Aycock swept the season series.

"Some nights you have to be able to rely on your defense to get you through," Golden Falcons head coach Steve Moats said. "We really pride ourselves on playing hard defensively and I thought we did a very good job tonight."

Neither team found any offensive rhythm in the first half.

Rosewood made just four field goals in the opening eight minutes, but that was good enough to take a 9-8 lead after the first quarter. C.B. Aycock responded with improved interior defense and rebounding in the second half and built a 22-16 lead by the intermission.

"Tonight we didn't respond well to adversity as a team," Rosewood head coach Daniel Mitchell said. "When things started to turn in (C.B. Aycock's) favor we kind of put our heads down and we started playing like individuals."

The Golden Falcons got back-to-back baskets from Michael Williams and A.J. Mundle to open the third quarter and proceeded to put the game out of reach with a 9-2 run.

Williams paced the C.B. Aycock attack with 15 points and nine rebounds. Trey Woodard added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

"We didn't score consistently, but we made some timely shots," Moats said. "It was one of those games where we would score eight points in a minute and then go four minutes without scoring, but in the end it worked out."

Jyonte Raynor was the only Eagle in double figures with 11 points.

C.B. Aycock (4-3 overall) plays host to Nash Central, while Rosewood (3-2) visits Midway on Monday.
