Two MOC freshman shine in cross country debut

MOUNT OLIVE -- Freshman Dylan Lafond led Mount Olive to perfection during its season-opening cross country meet against rival Barton College.

Lafond turned in a blazing time of 16 minutes, 6 seconds and the Trojans took the top eight spots which led to their perfect score of 15. Jamar Davis placed second, followed by fellow freshmen Mike Munoz and Aki Kitagawa.

Junior Erasmo Ordonez completed the top five.

Chris Free emerged Barton's top runner with a ninth-place time of 17 minutes.

The Trojan women were almost perfect in an 18-45 triumph.

Led by freshman and meet winner Amber Thompson, MOC logged seven of the eight fastest times. Thompson set the standard on the 5K course with a run of 19:06 -- 17 seconds faster than junior Chelsea Long, who qualified as an individual for the 2012 NCAA Division II championship meet.

Barton's Erica Skinner denied MOC's bid for perfection with a third-place finish of 19:54. The Trojans took the next five spots -- Megan Bucek (20:18), Courtney Seifert (20:37), Emily Shaw (20:50), Christina Jordan (21:01) and Crissy Petro (21:06).

The Trojans run again Sept. 15 at the Winthrop University Invitational.

Volleyball

FLORENCE, S.C. -- The Mount Olive College women's volleyball team posted a 1-3 record during the Francis Marion (S.C.) University Invitational contested Friday and Saturday.

The Trojans upended Peach Belt member USC Aiken in five sets, but dropped three-set affairs against Newberry, in-state foe Mars Hill and Francis Marion.

Junior middle hitter Carly White pounded out 18 kills and Nicole Sparks served an ace on match point against USCA. Danielle Plante and Lauren Lee provided eight kills apiece for the Trojans, while Nicole Karas logged a double-double with 41 assists and a team-high 12 digs.

White supplied six kills and a match-high five blocks in the Newberry defeat. Sarah Robertson contributed six kills and three blocks. Dezirae Mackey posted three blocks.

Mackey provided eight kills against Mars Hill and White had seven. Karas handed out 29 assists and Sparks emerged the defensive leader with 14 digs.

White and Ashlee Reuter combined for seven blocks in the FMU setback. Karas chipped in 26 assists and eight digs, while Lee picked up nine digs. Lee and Mackey finished with seven kills apiece.

Women's soccer

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -- The Mount Olive College women's soccer team registered 10 shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net in a 7-0 loss to North Georgia on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (0-2-0 overall) face West Florida at 11 a.m. Monday.
