PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock showed up at practice on Monday following its 40-0 loss at Wilson Hunt unsure of itself as a football team.
The Golden Falcons know exactly who they are now.
Aycock's defense intercepted three passes and held Greene Central to 184 yards of total offense in a 36-7 victory at Hardy Talton Stadium on Friday night.
The Golden Falcons needed just three plays to reach the end zone on their opening drive. Khaliel Owens' 30-yard run set up Neil Clark's 40-yard touchdown run. Jacob Harrison's extra point was no good and Aycock led 7-6.
The Rams recovered a fumble in Golden Falcons' territory and quarterback Austin Batchelor's cashed in a 1-yard touchdown run. Thomas Radford's extra point put Greene Central in front 7-6.
The Rams would not score again and struggled to finish drives all night.
"If I knew what the key to not finishing drives was we would have finished them," Greene Central head coach Ken Grantham said. "I don't feel like we have taken a step forward in the past two weeks."
Batchelor threw three interceptions. Devin Graves picked off Batchelor twice and Austin Snowden also had an interception. The Rams recorded 11 plays that resulted in negative yardage.
"The challenge for us was to show up on Monday and still believe we are still a good football team," Golden Falcons' head coach Randy Pinkowski said. "They started to believe in themselves on Wednesday. We had three interceptions and we made some adjustments and the kids compensated for them.
"All I was doing was calling the blitzes and the kids were calling the defense on the field. When your defense starts to do that you are going to be OK."
Snowden's 3-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter and his failed two-point conversion attempt left Aycock in front 12-6 at the half. Snowden finished with 104 yards on 14 carries and made wise decisions on zone read plays all night.
The Golden Falcons rushed for 339 yards despite the absence of starting tailback Jeremy Hooks. Hooks missed the game after sustaining a head injury in the loss at Wilson Hunt.
"This year we just trimmed down that option and we found out when all Austin has to worry about is whether to give the ball or keep it he is very good at that," Pinkowski said. "You saw it work to perfection tonight."
Snowden's 5-yard touchdown run capped a 73-yard drive to start the second half as the lead grew to 18-7.
Jay Suber and Cody Garris tacked on touchdown runs of 38 and 54 yards respectively in the fourth quarter for Aycock. Dillon Baker added a 7-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes.
The Golden Falcons (2-1 overall) play host to Goldsboro on Sept. 7 while Greene Central travels to Eastern Wayne.
