C.B. Aycock throttles Fike

PIKEVILLE -- Total domination.

That is the only way to describe the Charles B. Aycock's 12-0 softball victory over Wilson Fike in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A softball playoffs on Tuesday night.

C.B. Aycock (25-2 overall) continues play Friday against an undetermined opponent.

The Golden Falcons batted around in each of the first two innings and belted out eight hits to go along with six walks as they built their lead against the Golden Demons.

"Tonight I was glad to see that we didn't come out flat," C.B. Aycock head coach Brad Matthews said. "I thought we started the game with a lot of intensity and we took advantage of our opportunities to jump out in front."

Brooke Bell led off the first inning with a single and Meredith Burroughs drew an intentional walk. Rachel Jordan reached on an error and Ivy Hartzell plated a run with a sacrifice fly. Connor Davis was hit by a pitch and Reagan Herndon belted an RBI single. Cierra Harris reached on a second Golden Demon error as two more runs crossed the plate.

Ahead 4-0, Aycock did not slow down in the second inning.

Bell drew a lead-off walk and was followed by an intentional walk to Burroughs and an unintentional walk to Jordan. Ivy Hartzell plated one run with a single before Burroughs and Jordan scored on consecutive wild pitches. Connor Davis drew a walk and Herndon belted a two-run double to make the score 9-0.

Misty Edwards plated Herndon with a single and was moved into scoring position on Taylor Bradshaw's base hit. Bell capped the rally with a two-run single that made the score 12-0.

"Everyone up and down the lineup hit the ball tonight," Matthews said. "We had good approaches at the plate and we made their pitcher's work."

Bell pitched four sterling innings in the pitcher's circle to earn the win for the Golden Falcons. The senior allowed just one and struck out six batters. Savannah Briggs finished the game with one inning of scoreless relief.

"I think Brooke only threw about 45 pitches in four innings," Matthews said. "That is a nice workout for her and it gives us a lot of confidence going forward, no matter who we play."
