Girls' soccer

Eastern Wayne 6,

Southern Wayne 1

* Eastern Wayne built a 3-0 lead in the first half and went on to a 6-1 win over Southern Wayne on Tuesday night in the first round of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament.

McKenna Dove scored off Megan Mozingo's assist to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute. A minute later, Ali Dixon found the back of the net off Ann Reed Hulse's assist. Katherine Gambella increased Eastern Wayne's lead to 3-0 in the 34th minute off Kaitlin Tallarida's assist.

Dixie Ramirez got Southern Wayne on the scoreboard in the 39th minute.

Hulse scored twice in the second half and also recorded an assist. Mozingo added a goal and Lillie Herlihy also had an assist.

The third-seeded Warriors (8-7-0) travel to second-seeded Cleveland today.

Wayne Country Day 12, Pope John Paul 0

* Catherine Langston scored three goals in four minutes as part of Wayne Country Day's offensive outburst in a 12-0, non-conference win over Pope John Paul on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers opened up a 5-0 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game as Sarah Best and Catherine Ford both scored two goals. Margaret Tanner added a goal. Langston then scored three consecutive goals in the 14th, 15th and 18th minutes. Bailee Creger scored off Best's assist late in the first half.

Mollie McDonald, Meredith Roethling and Ami Hodges each scored in the second half. Abbey Pope contributed an assist.

Wayne Country Day (11-5-0) entertains Ridgecroft today.

Rosewood 5,

Goldsboro 1

* Logan Bill tallied two goals and added an assist during Rosewood's 5-1 triumph over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Goldsboro.

Kerri Jo Gurley, Rionna Allen and Cory Smith also scored for the Eagles. Samantha Allen, Marissa Hill and Smith dished out one assist apiece.

Holly Pittard notched the Cougars' lone goal off Ana Harris' assist.

The Eagles (7-4-2 overall, 5-0-0 CC) conclude regular-season play today at archrival Princeton, while the Cougars (3-7-2, 1-4-0) entertain Spring Creek.

Boys' tennis

C.B. Aycock 6,

Currituck County 0

* BARCO -- Charles B. Aycock dropped just three games in singles action and handed Currituck County a 6-0 loss the opening round of the N.C. High School Association Class 3-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

Will Hoff, Austin Walker, Sam Chastain and Jackson Yelverton each recorded a shutout win in singles. Michael Kearney lost one game at No. 2 singles, while Chas Hooks prevailed 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 slot.

"We played exceptional tennis throughout the lineup," CBA head coach Luke Vail said. "Our consistency and concentration were the keys to our success. Hopefully, we are starting to play our best tennis of the year now.

"It's always good to play well and build confidence in the opening round of the playoffs."

The Golden Falcons (16-4 overall) play host to Wilson Fike on Tuesday.

Rosewood 6, Cape Hatteras 0

* BUXTON -- Rosewood swept the singles courts and handed Cape Hatteras a 6-0, opening-round defeat in the NCHSAA Class 1-A dual-team playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

The teams agreed to play eight-game pro sets.

The Eagles got wins from Carolina Conference singles champion Dylan Cuddington, Daniel El Awar, Nathan Tubb, Nolan Tubb, Hunter Hinson and Tevin Hines.

Fouad Ismail did not play due to an injury.

Rosewood (9-5 overall) continues play next Tuesday at Four Rivers champion Riverside.

Baseball

North Duplin 6, Rosewood 1

* North Duplin defeated Carolina 1-A Conference foe Rosewood 6-1 on Tuesday night.

Larry White pitched a complete game for the Rebels with 11 strikeouts. James Kornegay supplied two hits, including a triple and an RBI. Trey Pate and Breyon Johnson both had two hits and an RBI.

Matt Shaw contributed a double for the Eagles.

John Winslow endured the loss on the mound.

Rosewood visits Princeton on Thursday, while North Duplin plays host to Spring Creek on Friday.

North Lenoir 10, Cleveland 0 (6 inn.)

* LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir advanced to the semifinals of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament with a 10-0, six-inning win over Cleveland on Tuesday night.

Landon Letchworth pitched all six innings for the Hawks and surrendered three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts.

Chastin Radford led North Lenoir with two hits, including a home run and four RBI. Mikal Batts added two hits and an RBI. Dylan Puchalski also hit a home run and Sammy West, Khalil Wright, JT Williams and Caleb Kearney all had a hit.

The Hawks (15-7 overall) visit Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Wayne Country Day 11, Epiphany 0 (5 inn.)

* Wayne Country Day pushed across 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning and rolled past Epiphany 11-0 in five innings on Tuesday afternon.

Hil Tanner (three RBI), Cole Davis (two RBI) and Josh Jackson (two RBI) each had two hits for the Chargers. John Strickland and Cody Neal each provided an RBI. Neal earned the win on the mound with four shutout innings. Davis pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

With the win, Wayne Country Day clinched a share of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference regular-season championship. The Chargers can clinch the title outright with a win over Greenfield on Friday night at historic Fleming Stadium in Wilson.

Spring Creek d. Goldsboro

* Five Spring Creek pitchers combined to hold Goldsboro to one hit in a victory over the Cougars on Tuesday evening.

Allen Coor earned the win on the mound. Zack Harrell finished with three hits and Ian Ladd had two hits.

Spring Creek (14-8 overall, 7-2 CC) visits North Duplin on Friday.

Softball

Rosewood 9, North Duplin 3

* Rosewood broke open a close game with six runs in the fifth inning of a 9-3 win over North Duplin on Tuesday night.

Megann Tyndall and Meghan Millard both had two hits for the Eagles. Amanda Beckert earned the win inside the pitcher's circle.

Alonna Pate and Raychel Barwich both finished with two hits for the Rebels. Casey Thornton, Skylar McCarty, Ansley Hill and Kayla Alphin each had a hit.

Rosewood travels to Princeton on Thursday, while North Duplin visits Goldsboro today.

Spring Creek 20, Goldsboro 8

* Spring Creek turned back Carolina 1-A Conference foe Goldsboro 20-8 on Tuesday.

Brandi Johnson led the Cougars with three hits, four stolen bases, three runs scored and an RBI. Talaya Lassiter added a hit and an RBI.

Goldsboro (2-13 overall, 0-8 CC) plays host to North Duplin today.

Golf

Lane Tree LGA

* Barbara Hill won game-of-the-week honors during weekly play at Lane Tree Golf Club. Linda Watson secured low net and Linda Cannon claimed low putts.

Cathy Garris grabbed low gross with a score of 78.

Linda Watson won the Lane Tree Presidents Cup with a three-week total of 210. Mary Ann Sutton finished second.

Walnut Creek LGA

* Linda Cannon and Betty Holloway shared low putt honors during weekly play at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Hiromi Sueki and Penny Ritt claimed low gross and low net, respectively.

Middle schools

* Softball: Wayne Christian 11, Lee Christian 1 -- Victoria Combs earned the win in the pitcher's circle for the Eagles. Combs was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Georgia Parnell also had a double.
