Golden Falcons' weapons too much for EW

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock used the strength in numbers theory to its advantage Tuesday evening.

Eastern Wayne struggled to adjust.

The Golden Falcons used numerous attackers to pressure the Warriors' defense relentlessly throughout a 7-1 victory during their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference girls' soccer match Tuesday evening at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Cheyenne Warrick gave Aycock an early lead off Alex Strickland's assist in the sixth minute. Emily Borel increased the lead to 2-0 off Sam Parrish's assist in the 11th minute.

"We talked before the game about neutralizing their midfield and pressing all night long," Golden Falcons' assistant coach Byron Adkins said. "Eastern Wayne has a young team and it worked out good for us."

Strickland extended Aycock's advantage to 3-0 off Borel's assist as Aycock (7-3 overall, 5-0 ECC) continued to harass the Eastern Wayne defense. Parrish's shot in the 15th minute sailed wide. Cady Sheeks' shot in the 16th minute was saved by Warriors' keeper Erica Duke. Warrick missed wide in the 24th minute.

"We knew Aycock was going to bring players forward," Eastern Wayne head coach Jorg Wagner said. "If you play a team like Aycock that has a few weapons, it can be difficult. When they bring large numbers the switching off gets a little confusing for younger players."

Ann Reed Hulse pulled the Warriors (3-4, 3-2 ECC) to within 3-1 off Megan Mozingo's assist in the 28th minute.

Borel scored off a corner kick in the 43rd minute as the lead grew to 4-1.

Strickland scored her second goal of the game off Warrick's assist in the 43rd minute. Warrick's goal off Cheyenne Craft's assist in the 70th minute pushed the lead to 6-1. A minute later, Strickland capped the scoring off Craft's assist.

"Cheyenne's (Warrick) goals are down a little bit this year and that's good because it means everybody else is getting involved," Adkins said. "It creates a lot of problems for everybody else. We're solid. Our defense plays really well and the forwards are doing what they're supposed to be doing and Cheyenne creates so much."

Eastern Wayne keeper Erica Duke finished with 12 saves.

Alex Van-Meir had three saves for the Golden Falcons.

The Warriors (3-4, 3-2) entertain Triton on Friday, while Aycock faces Northern Nash at The Brittany VII in Wilson.
