Boys basketball

C.B. Aycock 76, Eastern Wayne 60

* Michael Williams poured in a game-high 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and inspired Charles B. Aycock dismantled Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Eastern Wayne, 78-60, on Friday evening.

The Golden Falcons played without guard Cody Garris, whose grandfather died earlier in the week. The players dedicated the game to him and his family.

"This conference ... on any given night," said Eastern Wayne head coach Marvin Bowman as his voice trailed off momentarily. "The first quarter, I thought our guys should have played better defense. As the game went on, their confidence got better and they were just knocking down shots.

"They played very well."

The game was tied on six occasions in the opening quarter as the teams battled to a 21-21 draw through an exhausting eight minutes of back-and-forth action.

Michael Kearney and Shakel Powell constantly fed passes to Williams, who logged a nine-point second quarter. Aycock led 42-28 at the break and extended its margin throughout the second half.

"Mike has been in a little bit of a slump the last couple of games, really all of our guys have for like the last five games," said Golden Falcons head coach Steve Moats. "To see them come out and shoot in rhythm, and with confidence tonight says a lot about our guys."

Moats praised the defense of DeShawn Forte, who drew the assignment of guarding sharp-shooter Lee Atkinson, who is ranked among the area's top 10 scorers. The lanky Forte constantly draped Atkinson, who tallied 13 of his team-best 22 points after the outcome had been decided.

Tyrick Kornegay complemented Atkinson with a 17-point effort.

Powell and Kearney finished with 15 and 10 points, respectively, for the Golden Falcons. Aycock collected 18 team assists on 31 field goals.

The Warriors (8-12 overall, 5-5 ECC) travel to Triton on Tuesday, while the Golden Falcons (4-15, 3-8) conclude regular-season play next Thursday at Southern Wayne.

South Johnston 64,

Southern Wayne 40

* FOUR OAKS -- Southern Wayne lost for the second consecutive outing with a 64-40 defeat to South Johnston on Friday night.

Jameil Watson led the South Johnston offense with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Southern Wayne (15-6 overall, 7-3 ECC) will travel to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Rosewood 62, Spring Creek 57

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood got key baskets in overtime and rallied for a 62-57 win over Carolina 1-A Conference rival Spring Creek on Friday.

Jyonte Raynor led the Eagles with 18 points. Josh Davis finished with 15 points in the win.

Adam Haggerty paced Spring Creek with 25 points. Rasean Edwards added 21 points for the Gators.

Rosewood (8-9 overall, 4-4 CC) will host North Duplin on Tuesday, while Spring Creek (7-11, 2-6) will entertain Goldsboro.

Ayden-Grifton 61, North Duplin 54

* CALYPSO -- Ayden-Grifton held off a late rally by North Duplin for a 61-54 victory on Friday night on the Carolina 1-A Conference basketball scene.

Breyon Johnson led the Rebels with 25 points. James Kornegay added nine points in the defeat.

North Duplin (4-13 overall, 1-7 CC) will travel to Rosewood on Tuesday night.

Wayne Country Day 101, Epiphany 59

* Wayne Country Day made shots throughout a 101-59 win over Epiphany on Friday night.

Brandon McCarter emerged the high scorer for the Chargers with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Hil Tanner finished with 26 points and Deshar Thomas added 16 points.

Wayne Country Day will host Faith of Rocky Mount on Tuesday.

Grace Christian 62, Wayne Christian 39

* RALEIGH -- Grace Christian got its offense rolling early and often in a 62-39 win over Wayne Christian on Friday night.

Chase Darden and Seth Slusher paced the Wayne Chrsitian attack with 13 points apiece. Chris Easom added seven points.

Wayne Christian (4-20 overall) will travel to Crossroads Christian on Monday.

Faith Christian 61,

Gateway Christian 39

* Faith Christian used a big third quarter run to down Gateway Chrstian 61-39 on Friday night.

Silas Denlinger led the Conquerors with 15 points. Aaron Hill tallied 14 markers.

Faith Christian (14-3 overall) will host Berean Baptist on Monday.

Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 71, Princeton 27

* PRINCETON -- Goldsboro broke open a tight game in the third quarter and rolled past Carolina 1-A Conference rival Princeton on Friday night.

The win assured Goldsboro (18-2 overall, 8-0 CC) at least a share of its third consecutive regular-season conference title.

Alexus Myles paced the Cougars with 20 points. Shatoria Exum added 16 points and Talaya Lassiter tallied 15. Brandy Johnson closed out the Cougars in double figures with 12 points.

Savanna Massengill emerged the only Bulldawg in double digits with 20 points.

Princeton (12-8, 6-2) visits Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday, while Goldsboro travels to Spring Creek.

Ayden-Grifton 36, North Duplin 25

* CALYPSO -- Ayden-Grifton used tough interior defense to hold down North Duplin on Friday night.

Jessica Jones led the North Duplin offense with 13 points and was the only Rebel in double figures.

North Duplin (4-13, 2-6) will travel to Rosewood on Tuesday.

South Johnston 52,

Southern Wayne 47

* FOUR OAKS -- South Johnston held on in the second half for a 52-47 win over Southern Wayne on Friday night.

Jane Hamilton led the Southern Wayne attack with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Southern Wayne (1-20 overall, 0-10 ECC) will travel to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Grace Christian 53, Wayne Christian 19

* RALEIGH -- Grace Christian built a large first half lead and never looked back in a 53-19 win over Wayne Christian on Friday night.

Katie Isenhower led the Eagles with seven points and four rebounds. Courtney Barrow added five points and four boards.

Wayne Christian will be the guest of Crossroads Christian on Monday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 45, South Johnston 23 -- Southern Wayne got 10 points from Tyron Johnson in a Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference win over South Johnston on Friday night. Tavaris Bradshaw added nine points for the Saints. Soutehrn Wayne improved to 19-1 overall.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 57, St. Mary's 45 -- Seth Harrell led the Eagles with 29 points in the victory. Wayne Christian improved to 8-7 overall.

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro Heat 30, North Wake 20 -- Gavin Portela led the Goldsboro attack with 12 points and five rebounds. Matt Poland and Harman Kaler each added six points in the win. The Heat improved to 2-10 overall.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 48, Epiphany 34 -- Preston Edwards led the Chargers with 13 points in the win. Jacob Magera added 12 points and Tony Townsend tallied 11. Wayne Country Day will host Faith of Rocky Mount on Tuesday.

* Girls' basketball: St. Mary's 18, Wayne Christian 14 -- Kasey Norris and Emily Wells each scored four points for Wayne Christian.
