Girls' basketball
Rosewood 49, Ayden-Grifton 31
* Rosewood jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 49-31 upset of Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Friday night.
The Eagles opened up a 12-8 lead in the first quarter and expanded the advantage to 26-14 at halftime. The second half was no better for the Chargers as Rosewood continually got baskets in the paint after breaking the visitors' full-court press.
"This was a big win for us because it kept us in the running for third place in the conference," Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells said. "We need to build off this win and play our best basketball in the second half of the conference schedule."
Alicia Burns paced the Eagles with 18 points. Holly Heath added 14 points and Logan Bill contributed nine points.
Rosewood (4-13 overall, 2-4 CC) travels to Goldsboro on Tuesday.
Goldsboro 61, North Duplin 31
* Goldsboro placed four players in double figures and cruised past North Duplin 61-31 in a Carolina 1-A Conference game Friday evening.
Alexus Myles led the Cougars with 17 points. Shatoria Exum had 15 points and Brandy Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds. Kasheika Wallace supplied 12 points.
The Cougars forced 30 turnovers.
"We didn't start the game very well," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock said. "I thought once we settled down, we did a nice job of pressuring the ball and forcing turnovers."
Jessica Jones led the Rebels with 16 points.
Goldsboro (16-2 overall, 6-0 CC) entertains Rosewood on Tuesday, while North Duplin (4-11, 2-4) travels to Princeton.
Princeton 53, Spring Creek 33
* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Princeton posted 22 points in the opening quarter and rolled past Carolina 1-A Conference foe Spring Creek, 53-33, at "The Swamp" on Friday evening.
Second-year Bulldogs head coach Marty Gurganus played his starters just 11 minutes, and 11 of 12 Bulldogs scratched in the scoring column. Nicole Melvin pumped in 13 of her game-high 17 points in the first period. Tori Paul supplied nine points, eight rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Savannah Massengill contributed six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jessica Brush provided six points and three rebounds. Hannah Woodard collected four points, three rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Princeton had 16 team assists and 19 steals.
Janna Price paced the Gators' offense with 16 points, including 14 in the second half. Alyssa Boria contributed five points, four rebounds and four steals. Bria Cromartie chipped in four points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
The Bulldogs (10-7 overall, 5-1 CC) welcome North Duplin on Tuesday, while the Gators (0-16, 0-6) are the guests of Ayden-Grifton.
Community Christian 50, Wayne Christian 33
* WILSON -- Wayne Christian failed to place a scorer in double figures in a 50-33 loss against Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Community Christian on Friday night.
Carly Hightower led the Eagles with seven points and eight rebounds. Courtney Barrow and Katie Isenhower each contributed six points. Isenhower had 13 rebounds and Barrow grabbed eight boards.
C.B. Aycock 44, South Johnston 41
* FOUR OAKS -- Charles B. Aycock held off South Johnston 44-41 on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene Friday evening.
Quankia Artis led the Golden Falcons with 16 points. Myleah Jones and Ivy Hartzell each had 10 points. Hartzell also had 10 rebounds. Jones and Imari Howell each grabbed eight boards.
Aycock (12-5 overall, 8-1 ECC) plays host to Cleveland on Tuesday.
Wayne Country Day 52, Freedom Christian 22
* Catherine Ford poured in 30 points to lead Wayne Country Day past Freedom Christian 52-22 on Friday evening.
The Chargers (8-5 overall) entertain Oakwood on Tuesday.
Boys' basketball
Community Christian 103, Wayne Christian 53
* WILSON -- Wayne Christian failed to slow down Carolina Christian 1-A Conference leader Community Christian in a 103-53 loss on Friday night.
David Swets lead the Eagles with 20 points. Seth Slusher added 14 points and Tyler Lacerda had 10. Swets grabbed eight rebounds and Lacerda distributed 10 assists. Wayne Christian (4-16 overall, 1-11 CCC) plays host to Coastal Christian on Monday.
Freedom Christian 72, Wayne Country Day 64
* Brandon McCarter scored 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Wayne Country Day endured a 72-64 loss to Freedom Christian on Friday night.
Hill Tanner supplied 13 points for the Chargers and Deshar Thomas added 11. Wayne Country Day entertains Oakwood on Tuesday.
Goldsboro Heat 68, Harnett County Faith Warriors 47
* The Goldsboro Heat defeated the Harnett County Faith Warriors 68-47 on Friday night.
Harrison Farley led the Heat (4-10, 2-7 NCHEAC) with 21 points, 17 rebounds, five steals and five blocks. Blake Poland provided 12 points and Bryson Farley had 11 points and six rebounds.
South Johnston 48, C.B. Aycock 27
* FOUR OAKS -- Charles B. Aycock failed to score than nine points in any quarter and was handed a 48-27 loss at South Johnston on Friday.
Cameron Johnson led the Golden Falcons with eight points. Michael Williams added seven.
Southern Wayne 60, Cleveland 51
* CLAYTON -- Southern Wayne bounced back from its first Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference loss of the season with a 60-51 win on Friday night at Cleveland.
Quintae Bradshaw scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Saints. Trey Allen also scored 13 points.
Southern Wayne (15-4 overall, 7-1 ECC) plays host to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.
JV sports
* Boys' basketball: C.B. Aycock 48, South Johnston 45 -- Neil Clark led the Golden Falcons' offense with 16 points. Trey Woodard and Javarius Williams chipped in nine points apiece. Aycock (8-7 overall) improved to 5-4 against Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foes this season, and entertains Cleveland on Tuesday.
* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 70, North Duplin 54 -- Khalil Robinson paced the Cougars with 14 points. Joe Baker had 12 points and Jaylen Moore added 10. Goldsboro plays host to Rosewood on Tuesday.
* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 53, Cleveland 24 -- Tarvis Bradshaw led the Saints with 12 points. Maurice Rodgers added 10 points.
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 55, Freedom Christian 39 -- Tyler Talton and Marlon Coley scored 16 points apiece for the Chargers. WCDS improved to 13-3 overall and entertains Oakwood on Tuesday.
Middle schools
* Girls' basketball: Wayne Christian 19, Community Christian 12 -- Emily Wells led the Eagles with 10 points. Jody Burly contributed six points. Wells and Brooke Slusher each pulled down 13 rebounds.
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Christian 40, Community Christian 28 -- Seth Harrell scored 17 points for the Eagles. Wayne Christian (7-7) plays host to St. Mary's on Feb. 3.
* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 54, Freedom Christian 33 -- Corey Carpenter pumped in 16 points and Preston Edwards contributed 15 points in the Chargers' victory. WCDS (14-0 overall) plays host Oakwood on Tuesday afternoon.
