Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 48,

Princeton 40

* Goldsboro used a big second quater to get past Carolina 1-A Conference foe Princeton on Fridya night.

The teams found themselves tied 10-10 after the opening eight minutes, but the Cougars took control in the second quarter with a 15-2 run that proved too much to come back from for the Bulldogs.

Poor clock management and shot selection allowed the visitors to cut the lead to six points late in the fourth quarter, but that is as close as it would get.

"I thought we played well in stretches but overall I can't say I was pleased with how we played," Goldsboro head coach LaTina Bullock said. "We have to play hard every play, not just when we feel like it."

Alexus Myles led the Cougars (12-2, 2-0) with 13 points. Kasheika Wallace added 12 points.

Savanna Massengill paced the Bulldogs with 18 points while teammate Katlyn Peedin finished with nine points.

Princeton (7-7, 2-1) will host Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday. The same night Goldsboro is the guest of Rosewood.

Rosewood 65,

Spring Creek 29

* Rosewood opened the game on a 12-2 run and never looked back in a 65-29 Carolina 1-A Conference win over Spring Creek on Friday.

Krystal Yelverton led the Eagles (3-10, 1-1 CC) with 13 points. Alicia Burns added 12 points.

"Our offense clicked in our last game against Ayden-Grifton," Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells said. "We're starting to execute better than we have all year. Having Alicia back from injury is huge for us."

Janna Price paced the Gators (0-12, 0-2) with 10 points.

The Eagles entertain Goldsboro on Tuesday while Spring Creek plays host to Ayden-Grifton.

Ayden-Grifton 41,

North Duplin 33

* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton jumped out to an ealry lead and never looked back in a 41-33 win over North Duplin on Friday night.

Cierra Dixon led the Chargers with 10 points.

Tearra Ammons paced the North Duplin offense with nine points. Jessica Jones added eight and Brianna Oliver finished with seven points.

North Duplin (2-10 overall, 0-3 ECC) plays host to Rosewood on Jan. 20.

North Lenoir 52,

Southern Wayne 51

* DUDLEY -- North Lenoir's Deshona Cox scored the game-winning basket in the final seconds as North Lenoir held off Southern Wayne 52-51 on Friday night.

Cox led the Hawks with 23 points.

North Lenoir (7-10 overall, 2-3 ECC) travels to Eastern Wayne on Tuesday. The same night Southern Wayne (1-12, 0-5) is the guest of C.B. Aycock.

Middle Creek 45,

C.B. Aycock 42

* PIKEVILLE -- Middle Creek made critical shots at key moments during a 45-42 win over C.B. Aycock on Friday night.

Quanika Artis led the Golden Falcons with 15 points. Imari Howell added 14 points and Ivy Hartzell finished with 11 points.

C.B. Aycock (9-4 overall) entertains Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

Trinity of Raleigh 58, Wayne Christian 32

* Wayne Christian failed to slow down Trinity of Raleigh in a 58-32 defeat on Friday night.

Courtney Barrow led the Eagles' offense with 13 points and seven rebounds. Katie Isenhower added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Wayne Christian plays host to Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

Boys' basketball

Ayden-Grifton 74, North Duplin 31

* AYDEN -- North Duplin never mounted much of an offensive attack in a 74-31 loss to Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton on Friday night.

Dashawn Payton led a quartet of Chargers in double-figures with 15 points.

Breyon Johhson emerged the leading scorer for North Duplin with 11 points. Tyler Royal added nine points in the loss.

North Duplin (3-9 overall, 0-3 ECC) plays host to Rosewood on Jan. 20.

Southern Wayne 56, North Lenoir 35

* DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne kept its perfect record in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference intact with a 56-35 win over North Lenoir on Friday night.

Jamiel Price led the Saints with 11 points. Andrew Matthews and Vernon Pemberton each finished with 10 points in the win.

Southern Wayne (13-3 overall, 5-0 ECC) travels to C.B. Aycock on Tuesday. North Lenoir (0-17 overall, 0-5 ECC) visits Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

Middle Creek 48, C.B. Aycock 36

* PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock never got its offense in gear in a 48-36 loss to Middle Creek on Friday night.

Michael Williams emerged as the leading scorer for the Golden Falcons with 15 points. Cameron Johnson and Derrick Loftin each added six points.

C.B. Aycock (3-10 overall) entertains Southern Wayne on Tuesday.

Triton 79, Eastern Wayne 45

* Triton made short work of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Eastern Wayne in a 79-45 win on Friday night.

Javon Darden led the Warriors with 12 points and five rebounds. Josiah Davis added 10 points and Lee Atkinson finished with seven points.

Eastern Wayne (6-8 overall, 3-2 ECC) plays host to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Faith Christian 52, Hilltop Christian 42

* FUQUAY-VARINA -- Faith Christian seized control early and bested Hilltop Christian 52-42 on Friday night.

Connor Anderson led the way for the Conquerors with 16 points. Aaron Hill added 12 points in the win.

Faith Christian (8-2 overall) travels to Trinity of Greenville on Tuesday night.

Trinity of Raleigh 48, Wayne Christian 35

* Wayne Christian struggled through a tough second half en route to a 48-35 defeat at the hands of Trinity of Raleigh on Friday night.

Seth Slusher emerged as the only Eagle in double figures with 12 points.

Wayne Christian entertains Crossroads Christian on Tuesday.

Orange County Homeschool 51, Goldsboro Heat 46

* The Goldbsoro Heat homeschool basketball team suffered a 51-46 setback to Orange County on Friday night.

Harrison Farley paced the Heat with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan Portela added 11 points and 7 rebounds. The Heat (2-8 overall) play at Wayne Country Day on Monday.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 74, Princeton 54 -- Justin Cates led the Goldsboro offense with 13 points. Joe Baker added 12 points and Rashien Mallette finished with 11 for the Cougars. Goldsboro visits Rosewood on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Southern Wayne 76, North Lenoir 43 -- Tarvaris Bradshaw led the Southern Wayne attack with 23 ponts. The Saints improved to 14-2 overall. Southern Wayne travels to C.B. Aycock on Tuesday.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 76, Pope John Paul 40 -- Dennis Mitchell scored 21 points for the Chargers. Ramel Carpenter, Jason Jones and Marlon Coley each had eight points. Wayne Country Day (9-3) plays host to the Goldsboro Heat at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Middle schools

* Boys' basketball: Neuse Charter 47, Wayne Christian 38 -- Seth Harrell led the Eagles with 16 points. Wayne Christian fell to 5-6 overall.

* Boys' basletball: St. Mary's 48, Goldsboro Heat 43 -- Thomas Vermillion and Clay West led the scoring for the Heat with 12 and 10 points respectively. The Heat fell to 0-6 overall.
