Eastern Wayne downs C.B. Aycock boys

PIKEVILLE -- Eastern Wayne had to find another scorer in its game against Charles B. Aycock on Friday night.

Tyrik Kornegay was more than capable.

With the Golden Falcons playing an exotic zone defense keyed on sharpshooter Lee Atkinson, the Warriors turned to Kornegay who responded with a career-high 27 points to lead the visitors to a 53-36 victory.

"Tyrik was able to make shots when he was given opportunities," Eastern Wayne head coach Marvin Bowman said. "In the first half we had a really good flow to our offense and it led to some easy baskets for our gaurds."

Eastern Wayne jumped ahead 11-3 after one quarter and then opened the flood gates in the second period. A 20-6 run by the Warriors pushed the advantage to 31-9 and eventually to 36-13 at the intermission.

C.B. Aycock responded with an 11-2 run to start the third quarter to get back into contention, but Eastern Wayne went into its stall offense and ran the clock out effectively for the better part of the second half.

"Eastern Wayne does a really nice job of moving in their zone and once we got behind there wasn't enough time to come back," Golden Falcons head coach Steve Moats said. "We shot 24 percent from the field and there is no way to win like that."

Michael Williams led the home team with 15 points. Roddrick Jones added seven points in the defeat.

Atkinson complimented Kornegay with 14 points and finished as the only other Warrior player in double figures.

"We kind of expected (C.B. Aycock) to play box-and-one on Lee," Bowman said. "We have seen it a couple of times already this year from other teams and I thought our guys handled it well."

Eastern Wayne (6-7 overall, 3-1 ECC) plays host to Triton on Jan. 13. The same night C.B. Aycock (3-9, 2-3) will host Middle Creek.
