Girls' basketball

Eastern Wayne 54, So. Johnston 44

* Eastern Wayne used a critical 11-0 run that took just 70 seconds to seal a 54-44 win over visiting South Johnston on Friday evening.

It was the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Trojans trimmed a 17-point deficit 36-31 early in the fourth quarter. The Warriors turned up the pressure defensively to force turnovers and scored 11 unanswered points to break the game open.

"We wanted to come out and put a little pressure on the ball," Eastern Wayne head coach Tyrone Wagner said. "That was a big stretch. Our girls know they have what it takes they just haven't been able to put it all together. This is a learning experience and they're starting to grow up a little bit."

Megan Mozingo led the Warriors (2-4, 1-0 ECC) with 11 points. Tianna Christopher had 10 points. Whitney Williams scored 13 points for South Johnston.

Eastern Wayne plays host to ECC foe Cleveland on Tuesday.

Chapel Hill 38, Goldsboro 33

* Goldsboro suffered through a disastrous fourth quarter as Chapel Hill rallied for a 38-33 win at Norvell T. Lee Gymnasium on Friday night.

The Cougars led 27-23 after three quarters, but failed to score a point in the first four minutes of the fourth period. Meanwhile, the Tigers jumped into the lead with a 6-0 run that was capped by a 3-pointer by Jameila Smith.

Smith paced the Chapel Hill with 14 points and four rebounds. Lila Scott added five points, all in the final five minutes of the game.

Kasheika Wallace led Goldsboro with nine points and nine rebounds. Alexus Myles scored with points before fouling out in the final minute of the fourth quarter.

Goldsboro (5-1 overall) travels to Southern Nash on Monday.

Hobbton 66, North Duplin 40

* NEWTON GROVE -- North Duplin started slowly and never recovered in a 66-40 defeat at Hobbton on Friday night.

The visitors pulled away to a 17-4 lead after one quarter or play.

Tearra Ammons led the North Duplin attack with 15 points. Jessica Jones added 14 points in the defeat.

North Duplin (1-4 overall) plays host to Lejeune on Tuesday.

Fayetteville Christian 45,

Wayne Country Day 35

* Fayetteville Christian held the Wayne Country Day offense in-check throughout a 45-35 win on Friday night.

Catherine Ford paced the Charger offense with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

Wayne Country Day (3-2 overall) entertains Trinity Christian of Fayetteville on Tuesday.

South Lenoir 68, Spring Creek 9

* DEEP RUN -- Caroline Jones led the Blue Devils with a game-high 12 points. Spring Creek entertains Jones Senior on Monday.

Triton 76, C.B. Aycock 45

* PIKEVILLE -- Unbeaten Triton broke open the game with a 24-point third-quarter outburst and romped to a 76-45 victory over C.B. Aycock in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams Friday evening.

Michael Williams led the Golden Falcons' offense with 11 points. Roddrick Jones added nine, while Shakel Powell contributed eight.

Derrick Elliott and Tony McNeill led a balanced Triton attack with 13 points apiece. Dedrick Stacker knocked down 12 points for the Hawks, who 12 players to scratch into the scoring column.

Aycock (0-6 overall) committed more than turnovers (19) than field goals (16), and managed just six third-quarter points in the loss. The Golden Falcons visit North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Hobbton 55, North Duplin 52

* NEWTON GROVE -- Hobbton overcame a halftime deficit and rallied past North Duplin 55-52 on Friday night.

Jonathan Faison led the Wildcats with 12 points. Rashad Davis, Gabriel Barksdale and Brandon Parker each added 11 points in the win.

Devin Oliver paced the North Duplin offense with 21 points. Breyon Johnson added 12 points for the Rebels.

North Duplin (2-3 overall) plays host to Lejeune on Tuesday.

Rosewood 64, Midway 42

* SPIVEYS CORNER -- Rosewood put together its best offensive performance of the young season in a 64-42 win over Midway on Friday night.

Jyonte Raynor led the way for the Eagles with 17 points. Shayne Whitley added 11 points in the win.

Rosewood (3-3 overall) visits Lejeune on Monday.

North Johnston 55, Princeton 54

* KENLY -- North Johnston made critical plays down the stretch of a 55-54 win over Princeton on Friday night.

Malik Adams led the Panthers with 11 points.

C.J. Jeffreys paced the Princeton attack with 24 points. Aaron Simpkins added 10 points in the loss.

Princeton (4-4 overall) travels to Cleveland on Wednesday.

Southern Wayne 79, Jones Senior 50

* TRENTON -- Southern Wayne kept its hot streak alive with a 79-50 win over Jones Senior on Friday night.

Jameil Price led the Saints' offense with 32 points. Ronell Outlaw and Chris Artis each added 11 points in the victory.

Southern Wayne (7-1 overall) visits Triton on Tuesday to open Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Fayetteville Christian 41,

Wayne Country Day 37

* Brandon McCarter scored 17 points but it was not enough as Fayetteville Christian held off Wayne Country Day 41-37 on Friday night.

Deshar Thomas added 15 points for the Chargers. Wayne Country Day plays host to Trinity Christian of Fayetteville on Tuesday.

South Lenoir 55, Spring Creek 49

* TRENTON -- No details were reported. Spring Creek will host Jones Senior on Monday.

* Boys' basketball: Wayne Country Day 62, Fayetteville Christian 58 -- Dennis Mitchell led Wayne Country Day with 20 points in a 62-58 win over Fayetteville Christian on Friday night. Jamel Ford added 16 points in the win. Wayne Country Day improved to 4-1 overall.
