Boys' basketball
Waccamaw 46, Wayne Country Day 44
* Wayne Country Day failed to convert on a pair of critical possessions late in a 46-44 loss to visiting Waccamaw Academy on Friday night.
The game was tied at 44-44 and the Chargers had the ball coming out of a timeout. Wayne Country Day committed a costly turnover that led to a pair of game-winning free throws by Greg Wilson with three seconds remaining. Wilson finished with a game-high 30 points, including a 10 for 10 performance at the free throw line.
The Chargers (3-1) has one final possession but it too was unsuccessful.
"We got exactly the play that we want," Wayne Country Day head coach Terry Jones said. "We got it going in the right direction. It's just one of those things again where we were off all night long."
Deshar Thomas led the Chargers with 18 points. Hil Tanner contributed 14 points. Wayne Country Day entertains Fayetteville Christian on Dec. 9.
Wilson Christian 66, Wayne Christian 45
* Wayne Christian failed to keep the Wilson Christian offense in check in a 66-45 defeat on Friday night.
Dylan Smith led the Eagles with 17 points. Seth Slusher added eight points and seven steals in the defeat. Chris Easom finished with eight points.
Wayne Christian (1-7) travels to Northwood Temple on Tuesday.
Rosewood 48, Midway 47
* Rosewood overcame a poor shooting performance and rallied for a 48-47 win over Midway on Friday night.
Jyonte Raynor led the Rosewood offense with 16 points. Teammate Dee Mabry was close behind with 15 points.
Rosewood (2-1) plays host Parrott Academy on Monday night.
North Johnston 51,
Princeton 41
* PRINCETON -- North Johnston got key baskets at critical times in a 51-41 win over county rival Princeton on Friday night.
Charles Sanders led the way for the Panthers with 12 points.
Dallas Stanford paced Princeton with 14 points. C.J. Jeffries added 12 points in the defeat.
Princeton (2-3) plays host Midway on Tuesday.
Hobbton 57,
North Duplin 48
* CALYSPSO -- North Duplin could not get key baskets in key moments in a 57-48 loss to Hobbton on Friday night.
Devin Oliver led the Rebels with 23 points. Breyon Johnson added 12 points in the defeat.
North Duplin (0-2) travels to Lakewood on Tuesday.
Wilson Hunt 62,
Charles B. Aycock 29
* WILSON -- C.B. Aycock failed to get its offense in gear in a 62-29 loss to Wilson Hunt on Friday night. The Warriors claimed the regular-season series.
Michael Williams led the Golden Falcons with 10 points. Derrick Lofton added five points.
C.B. Aycock (0-4) travels to Goldsboro on Tuesday night.
Goldsboro Heat 42, South Wake 35
* The Goldsboro Heat homeschool basketball team earned a 42-35 win over South Wake on Friday night.
Blake Poland led the Heat with 14 points and five assists.
The Heat (1-3l) play host to Harnett County Homeschools on Tuesday at Free Gospel Church in Snow Hill.
Girls' basketball
Goldsboro 53,
Southern Wayne 21
* DUDLEY -- Goldsboro played sound defense throughout a physical first half and jumped out to an early lead in a 53-21 win over rival Southern Wayne on Friday night.
The Cougars built an 11-2 advantage after the first period and lead 26-8 at the half.
Alexus Myles paced the Cougars with 15 points. Shatoria Exum finished with nine points and the duo of Brandy Johnson and Kasheika Wallace each recorded eight points respectively.
Danielle Carlton led the Saints with six points. Jane Hamilton added five points.
Southern Wayne travels to Wilson Fike on Tuesday. Goldsboro opens the home portion of its schedule against C.B. Aycock on Tuesday.
Hilltop Christian 43,
Faith Christian 21
* The shots stopped falling when the well dried up.
Hilltop Christian used a 16-2 run to put away the Crusaders 43-21 in a N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A region contest Friday evening.
Katie Watson's driving layup off Christina Powell's assist shaved the Chargers' advantage to a single point, 15-14, midway through the second half. Hilltop, the NCCSA 1-A runner-up last season, reeled off 14 consecutive points and 16 of 18 overall during an offensive surge that lasted 10-plus minutes.
Brianna Champion had Faith's lone basket in the decisive run.
"We just couldn't hit a shot," said Crusaders' head coach Eddie Smith.
Kendal Tutor and Morgan Cooper led Hilltop with 14 points apiece.
Powell emerged Faith's leader with nine points, three assists and two rebounds. Watson and Elizabethe Weeks pumped in six and five points, respectively. Meredith Mooring came off the bench to grab six rebounds.
The Conquerors fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Coastal play, while the Chargers remained unbeaten in seven outings this season.
North Duplin 49,
Hobbton 36
* CALYPSO -- North Duplin put together a solid defensive perfomance in a 49-36 victory over Hobbton on Friday night.
Jessica Jones emerged as the leading scorer for North Duplin with 21 points.
North Duplin (1-1) travels to Lakewood on Tuesday.
North Johnston 42,
Princeton 31
* PRINCETON -- Princeton got too far behind to come back in a 42-31 loss to North Johnston on Friday night.
Savanna Massengill led the Bulldawgs with 17 points.
Princeton (3-2) entertains Midway on Tuesday.
Wilson Hunt 64, C.B. Aycock 51
* WILSON -- Wilson Hunt swept the season series from C.B. Aycock with a 64-51 win on Friday night.
Imari Howell paced the Golden Falcon's effort with 18 points. Courtnei Gilbert added 11 points and Ivy Hartzell tallied seven markers in the defeat.
C.B. Aycock (2-2) travels to Goldsboro on Tuesday night.
JV sports
* Boy's basketball: Southern Wayne 52, Goldsboro 37 -- Maurice Butler lifted the Saints with 18 points, all coming on six 3-point field goals. Southern Wayne improved to 5-0 on the season.
* Boy's basketball: Wilson Hunt 31, C.B. Aycock 29 -- Neil Clark led the Golden Falcons with nine points and 10 rebounds. Trey Woodard added six points. C.B. Aycock fell to 2-2 on the season.
* Boy's basketball: Goldsboro Heat 40, South Wake 39 -- Jacob Hughes led the Heat with 11 points, including the game-winning free throw, and grabbed four steals. Blake Poland added 11 points.
* Girl's basketball: Goldsboro 23, Southern Wayne 22 -- Deja Moore led the Cougars with eight points. Kutura Moore added five points in the win. Jordan Wiley paced the Saints with eight points.
* Girl's basketball: Wayne Country Day 25, St. Mary's 14 -- Catherine Langston led the Chargers with 12 points and four steals. Bailee Creger added eight points in the win.
Middle school
* Boy's basketball: Wayne Country Day 36, St. Mary's 35 -- Preston Edwards led Wayne Country Day with 14 points. Wayne Country Day improved to 2-0.
