MOUNT OLIVE -- Omar Shazley redirected a Vieux Sarr pass into the goal to cap a late first-half scoring flurry and propelled Mount Olive past Pfeiffer University, 3-2, in an NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas men's soccer contest Wednesday evening.
The teams combined for four goals in a span of 11-plus minutes.
Sarr's goal at the 41:48 mark broke a 2-2 tie and sent the Trojans to their third consecutive win.
Charles B. Aycock alum Alex Rodriguez pulled the Trojans even at 1-1 in the 31st minute. Sarr converted a penalty kick in the 33rd minute and the Falcons answered with a PK of their own two minutes later.
MOC keeper Kyle Lavender recorded nine saves.
Porter leads women
MOUNT OLIVE -- Sarah Porter converted a free kick in the 62nd minute and lifted Mount Olive past in-state rival Pfeiffer University, 2-1, in an NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women's soccer match Wednesday evening.
After virtually a foul-free first 60 minutes, the visiting Falcons were whistled in the 63rd minute. Before Pfeiffer could get its defense set, Lindsey Stanley delivered a short pass to Porter who beat Pfeiffer goalkeeper Brittany Polly to break a 1-1 tie.
Trojan goalkeeper Lyndsey McIntyre ended the night with 11 saves.
MOC continues play at home Saturday against conference foe Belmont Abbey. The women kick off at 4 p.m., followed by the men at 7 p.m.
