Wayne West avoided threatening thunderstorms on Tuesday evening, but couldn't find an answer for its defensive woes.
Eight costly errors helped Spring Creek take a 12-2, Junior American Legion victory at Rosewood High School. The game was called after five innings.
Allen Coor scored on an error in the top of the first inning to put Spring Creek in front 1-0. Chris Nichols added a sacrifice fly and Zack Harrell raced home on a wild pitch. Trey Hammonds drove home a run on a fielder's choice.
West got a run back on Alex Brogden's run-scoring fielder's choice in the bottom of the first inning.
Cody Davis scored on an error in the top of the second to increase the lead to 5-1. Coor scored on Chad Spurgeon's ground out. Harrell trotted home on a wild pitch as the lead grew to 7-1.
Coor's RBI double in the top of the third inning pushed the margin to 8-1. Coor and Harrell both finished with two hits.
"We put the ball in play and got some hits," said Spring Creek head coach Heath Whitfield. "They made some mistakes and we took advantage of it. It was big to get them in a hole early and give our guys some confidence."
Harrell came home on an error in the top of the fourth inning. Ian Ladd supplied an RBI single and Hammonds scored on an error. Ladd later scored on an error to stretch the lead to 12-2.
Wayne West surrendered six unearned runs.
"We cannot afford to play defense the way we did tonight," said Wayne West assistant coach Michael Taylor. "We have to play fundamental defense. In the past couple of games we've been playing solid defense. It all starts on the defensive end, they took advantage of our mistakes."
Wyatt Janning recorded the win on the mound. The right-hander allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.
Jon Cherry led Wayne West with two hits.
Spring Creek entertains Charles B. Aycock tonight, while Wayne West plays host to North Lenoir on Thursday.
