Eagles attack Cougar defense

Rosewood attacked the net with relentless aggression and displayed the importance of working together.

The Eagles dominated the possession and played selflessly in a 4-0 Carolina 1-A Conference win at Goldsboro on Thursday night.

Logan Bill and Samantha Allen both scored for the Eagles in the first half. Cory Smith contributed an assist as Rosewood led 2-0 at the break.

Smith had shots saved by Cougars' goalie Sarah Moore in the 42nd and 43rd minutes. The Eagles couldn't convert on corner kicks in the 45th and 46th minutes. Smith increased the lead to 3-0 on an assist from Bill in the 49th minute.

"We're going to find the back of the net, it's going to come," said Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells. "We have a lot of girls in new roles. The unselfish play is what we need. We're running a system this year. The girls are finally starting to understand it.

"We threw a new formation at them tonight as well and they responded."

Patrice Robinson scored off a cross from Smith in the 54th minute. The Eagles held an 11-4 edge in shots on goal in the second half.

Moore made five saves in the final 40 minutes for Goldsboro. The Cougars struggled to clear the ball out of their own end and put little pressure on Rosewood's defense.

"Our girls are learning the game," said Goldsboro head coach Jim Phillips. "We were pinned deep most of the game and our defense struggled to get the ball out. A lot of times our midfielders were pushing up too far and our defenders were staying back too far, and we weren't filling up that gap between the two zones."

The Eagles (3-2-2 overall, 1-0 CC) entertain Spring Creek today. The Cougars (4-7-1, 0-2) play host to Spring Creek on Tuesday.
