C.B. Aycock holds Rosewood to one hit

PIKEVILLE -- Keep the ball rolling.

Charles B. Aycock continued to ride the wave of its early-season momentum in a 10-0, non-conference win over Rosewood in five innings on Wednesday evening.

Three Golden Falcons' pitchers combined to hold the Eagles to one hit as Aycock won for the sixth time in its last seven games.

"I didn't want us to have any let down today and for the most part we didn't," said Golden Falcons' head coach Charles Davis. "These kids have taken it upon themselves to do whatever it takes. As long as we take that same attitude we'll be fine."

Collin DuBose's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first inning gave Aycock a 1-0 lead. Craig Murdock's RBI groundout in the bottom of the second inning increased the lead to 2-0.

Jon Taylor's RBI double in the home half of the third inning boosted the Golden Falcons' advantage to 3-0. Bryant Stafford followed with a two-run home run to center field.

Cameron Taylor's two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning pushed the margin to 7-0. DuBose tacked on a sacrifice fly.

Aycock (6-2 overall) scored a run on an error in the bottom of the fifth. Jon Taylor's bases-loaded walk brought the mercy rule-shortened game to an end.

Jon Taylor led the Golden Falcons with three hits and two RBI. Cameron Taylor (two RBI) and Mick Walker both had two hits.

"Hitting is contagious and we're preaching to hit everything pole to pole and back up the middle," said Davis. "I thought we had some pretty good at-bats today being able to do those things."

Stafford earned the win on the mound. The junior left-hander struck out two and walked one in two innings of no-hit relief. Derek Limbaugh got the start and tossed 11/3 scoreless innings. DuBose worked 11/3 innings of relief.

"Our plan coming in was to use some different guys," said Davis. "I wanted to get them some work almost like a bullpen session. That's a big luxury when you've got some arms you can throw out there and feel pretty confident."

Ian Speight's fourth-inning single was the Eagles' only hit.

Rosewood (2-5) had just six base runners and had a runner picked off and another caught stealing. The Eagles' difficult non-conference schedule has included losses to Wilson Fike, Southern Wayne and Aycock.

"I think it's a measuring stick for us every night and that's really what I want," said Rosewood head coach Jason King. "We try really hard to schedule these teams and we try really hard to look for improvement. Even when it's a 10-0 loss you can find things that are positives but it also points out a lot of weaknesses.

"You can take those weaknesses and find out what you need to work on in practice and improve on that."

The Golden Falcons entertain Cleveland on Friday, while the Eagles visit Wilson Fike.
