CB Aycock drops Rosewood 7-0

PIKEVILLE -- Rosewood had no definitive answer to defending Charles B. Aycock's set pieces Wednesday evening.

The Golden Falcons were perfect in their execution.

Aycock converted two corner kicks and two free kicks into goals, and handed Rosewood a 7-0, non-conference loss at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Four different players scored for the Golden Falcons, which dealt the Eagles (2-3-1 overall) their second shutout loss of the season. Madison Mercer notched a hat trick (three goals), Emily Borel provided one goal and two assists, while Cheyenne Warrick supplied two goals.

Sam Parrish's goal in the final two minutes capped the outcome.

"The girls have worked hard this year and we have improved with each game," said Golden Falcons head coach Kevin Adkins.

Aycock (5-2-0) controlled possession from the opening kickoff. The Golden Falcons attempted two shots in the first 5 1/2 minutes, and Mercer delivered the game-winning goal near the seventh minute.

Borel belted a line-drive corner kick that Mercer headed between Eagles keeper Ellen Morgan and the near post. Eleven minutes later, Mercer put Aycock ahead 2-0 on an unassisted goal.

Warrick scored off Borel's corner kick in the 28th minute. With seven minutes left before halftime, Borel struck a well-placed free kick that curled around the Eagles' wall and into the net from outside the 18-yard box.

"I think we did very well on our set pieces," said Adkins. "We all moved well in the box at the same time and attacked the goal when the crosses came over. Movement is 95 percent of the game in soccer, and if you stand still, you don't receive the ball.

"If you move, then good things happen."

Mercer completed her hat trick on a free kick in the 43rd minute. Warrick, the area's top goal scorer, followed her own missed shot that deflected off Morgan and the crossbar, and tucked it into the net in the 64th minute.

Aycock owned a 28-3 edge in shots.

"They work the ball well, have girls that strike the ball and strike the ball on frame," said first-year Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells. "They're good and they're young. We struggled last week against Corinth-Holders with our first touch.

"Both teams have speed, but C.B. Aycock has speed along with first and second touches. When you have a girl like number 18 (Warrick), it's like she has velcro on her foot sometimes and she's a great player. She sets up (other) girls well even when you shut her down."

Morgan and backup goalie Rionna Allen combined for 10 saves.

Golden Falcons keeper Casey Scarboro stopped all three Rosewood shots, and earned her fourth shutout of the season.
