Girls' basketball

Goldsboro 51, North Duplin 25

* Goldsboro opened the game with 19 unanswered points and rolled to a 51-25 win over Carolina 1-A Conference rival North Duplin on Wednesday night.

Kasheika Wallace and Alexus Myles led the Cougars (10-6 overall, 3-1 CC) with 17 points apiece. Brandy Johnson added nine points. Angelica Favlea and Jessica Jones both scored eight points for the Rebels (2-10, 2-3).

The two teams meet again Friday in Calypso.

Triton 41, Southern Wayne 22

* ERWIN -- Southern Wayne never found its offense in a 41-22 defeat at Triton on Tuesday night.

Kanesha Jones paced the Saints with 8 points. Andrel Morris added five points in the loss.

Southern Wayne travels to South Johnston tonight.

Eastern Wayne 43, Cleveland 37

* CLAYTON -- Eastern Wayne held off a furious fourth quarter comeback attempt by Cleveland High School on Tuesday night for a 43-37 win.

Jasmine Benjamin and Tamiya Dortch each scored eight points respectively to lead the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne is the guest of Triton tonight.

Boys' basketball

Wayne Country Day 86, Oakwood 44

* Wayne Country Day made short work of Coastal Plains Independent 1-A rival Oakwood Academy in an 86-44 win on Wednesday night.

Tyson Pearson led the Charger offense with 26 points. Josh Gregory added 22 points and Hil Tanner contributed 12 points.

Wayne Country Day visits nemesis Greenfield on Friday night.

Wrestling

C.B. Aycock 54, Triton 21

* ERWIN -- Charles B. Aycock triumphed in five of eight contested matches, and clinched a share of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season title with a 54-21 rout of Triton.

"One team goal down, two to go," said Golden Falcons head coach Marc Peck.

Nick Jones, Jaquan Walker, Khaleil Owens, Nick Simmons and heavyweight Jarrod James each defeated their respective opponent, either by decision or by pin. Walker filled in for an injured Aaron Pate at 140 pounds.

"It was great to see Jaquan notch his first varsity win," said Peck.

The Golden Falcons' Jordan Bailey, David Romo, Daniel Romo, Preston Tucker and Zeb Darden each drew a forfeit.

Aycock (21-10 overall, 4-0 ECC) continues action Friday at D.H. Conley.

Eastern Wayne 47, Southern Wayne 24

* Archrivals Eastern Wayne and Southern Wayne battled to a 4-4 draw in contested matches, but the Warriors earned more forfeit points in their 47-24, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference victory.

The Warriors (13-9 overall, 3-1 ECC) moved within one victory of clinching a berth in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.

The Saints (2-11) exited 1-2 in the league.

"(The) same as last Friday, it was good to see a team win even though we are still not back at full strength," said Eastern Wayne head coach Jonathan Jones. "The most exciting thing about this year is that we have so many young wrestlers and are still doing well. The other thing is that we only gave up two pins, an improvement, of course, over some of our previous matches."

Eastern Wayne got victories from Brice Heller, Warren Kirkwood, Tyshawn Koonce, Brandon Gray, Nolan Kirkwood, Austin Helm, Dante Jackson and heavyweight Blake Terrell.

Bumbi Le, Jamison Dove, Ethan Brogden and Devin Lee each emerged victorious for the Saints. Southern Wayne also won the 189-pound match.

Southern Wayne 48, Princeton 36

* PRINCETON -- Southern Wayne collected five forfeits and won three individual matches in a 48-36, non-conference triumph over Princeton.

Brent Heath, Travis Memmelaar, Bumbi Le, Anthony Covington, Josh Maultsby, Jamison Dove, Ethan Brogden and Devin Lee each claimed a win for the Saints.

Princeton's individual winners were Nathan Woodard, Alan Fader, Dillon Pace, Forrest Stewart, Gabriel Teague and heavyweight James Hawley.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 72, North Duplin 39 -- Rodney Cook paced the Goldsboro offense with 15 points. Quavis Holloman added 13 points and Wes Tilley finished with 12 points in the win.

Middle schools

* Girls' basketball: Norwayne 27, Mount Olive 13 -- Ashley Darden led the Norwayne offense with 16 points. The Cobras play host to Greenwood today.
