Making the most of a rare situation, Goldsboro used a 14-0 run to put away scrappy North Duplin in a 72-39, Carolina 1-A Conference win on Wednesday night. The teams meet again Friday in Calypso.

The Rebels (4-8 overall, 2-3 CC) hit enough shots to keep the Cougars within striking distance. North Duplin knocked down three 3-pointer's during the second quarter and trailed 32-23 at the half.

"I thought we played hard," said Rebels' head coach Ricky Edwards. "Goldsboro's got a good team. We need to get some rest, and come out and play hard on Friday night."

Goldsboro (10-6 overall, 3-1 CC) led 40-29 midway through the third quarter, but used a 14-0 run to build a 54-29 lead early in the final period.

"A good shooting team is never out of it," said Cougars' head coach Patrick Reynell. "That's why we kept the pressure on them for so long. They had some open looks that they missed. Defensively, I thought we did a good job of cutting them off at angles and getting them going backwards instead of forwards."

Sophomore forward Damarian Henderson scored a game-high 23 points and gave Goldsboro an added physical presence in the paint. Devonte White supplied 12 points, while Jarran Reed and Moses Ramsey finished with nine points apiece.

"Damarian's young and he starts, and we understand there's going to be games as a sophomore where he plays really well," said Reynell. "Tonight with a size advantage that gave him confidence. He's really good at using his body. I thought all of our big guys did a good job with fundamental post moves and crashing the boards."

Breyon Johnson led North Duplin with 13 points. Devin Oliver contributed eight points and Tyler Royal had eight points.

"Obviously, they get to prepare for us and counter anything that we did," said Reynell. "For us, it's not so much about what they do. We've just got to make sure we play our game and do what we do well. We've got to crash the boards and play hard like we did tonight.

"We probably had more legs tonight than they did. We both get a day of rest and I don't expect Friday night to look like this."
